last year me red fox developed white mold in the head area. i sprayed it lightly with WD-40 and wiped it out. does anyone have the same problems? i dry in the basement, dry basement. do i have to add some dry heat or forced air to the pelts? i'm drying on wood and i put two little 3/8 od pieces of tubing in the eyes to promote air movement. he is what i have now.

i did the WD trick last year and it worked. i got good prices for my pelts. is it a deduction for this mold? thanks

I would say your basement is not warm enough, you need to add a little heat and some air circulation, your hides are retaining moisture too long.

How long was it on the board? Might have been not quite dry enough when you turned it. Next time when you turn it, rub some borax or alum in the lips/head area. I turn mine after 12 hours or so and then a couple days on the board fur out. After that I hang it by the nose and let air circulate up through it for a day or two.

We have that problem here with beaver hides once they're dry. We have so much humidity, that the mold flourishes. The WD40 trick works well for us too.

fur in for 24 hours, fur out for 5 days. then off the board. i put the nose end on the top of the hot water heater and the tail end in front of the louvers on the forced air heater. i thought that might help this year, a little dry moving air. maybe still not enough? it has rained and or snowed here more then it's been dry in the last two weeks.

Try spritzing it with a bleach spray next time you take them off the stretcher, it will act as a bacteria killer for anything ready to start.

You also need to keep some sort of air flow around them to help keep any additional moisture from accumulating on the inside.

Mold like that usually denotes it was turned to soon and was not quite filmed good enough.

You can see the same thing when you try to age a beef or wild game, if the meat don't skin over soon enough your going to see mold grow on it, however once it skins the mold don't grow.
