Phil, I was in on two ashes of loved ones that my father and I helped with. The folks had a minister each time and just two or three family. We did make sure the wind was off the Starboard side before committing the ashes to the Port side. It's what I want to happen over my fishing grounds , but I worry the wife will just dump me on the beach. If you don't know of anyone with a boat to do it, I know any charter boat will help. Sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear of your loss Phil.Your mom passed on my birthday.
Passing of a loved one is always a loss and a difficult transitional time in our lives. My mother and dad are still living at 93 but they are both losing ground.
It is not an easy time in life to experience and witness such things for any of us. As far as the disposition of the ashes I would do what your moms wishes may have been. No need to discuss anything with anyone in my opinion. Whose to know what you will do with them. That is a personal and private matter for each of us to handle in a way we all feel will suit us.
We had my motherinlaws ashes in a box in my basement for sometime before the brothers and sisters decided what they wanted to do with them. I think they eventually took them to the grave site of the father and dug a hole there and deposited them there. Thanks Bob. Edith says hi. Just found out that each of us siblings got a box of ashes. With no advance notice or eplanation. So the funeral director did a 3 way split on the ashes - oh well.

Sorry for your loss. I'm reminded of a story I saw on the news somewhere, about how survivers of the Battleship Arizona have a special ceremony, where Navy divers drop there cremated remains into the ship at Pearl Harbor, so they can be with their shipmates forever.

I saw that too. It is a very moving ceremony.
