I frown on credit card payments and started charging a 3% credit card fee.

I can see the change hurting business that use a lot of credit card transactions.

Someone told me not long ago that passing on a credit card fee was somehow illegal for businesses? Anyone heard this?

We have done and continue to do it like you mention Nate. We say right in our bids that there is a 2.75% convenience fee
applied when credit cards are utilized (unless manual entry is needed then it corresponds to that rate), never had anyone
question this, but obviously would be nice to be legal.

___

Edit - Decided to google it! smile

What came up is that it wasn't legal until around Jan. 2013, that was when a court case was settled that would allow folks
as merchants including big merchants to do so if they wanted to, in terms of recouping the fees they pay to visa, mastercard,
etc....

I'm still curious though if prior to that date it was illegal or just not normal or accepted practice?

When we receive a credit card number from a customer, we are so busy breaking out the champagne and celebrating that we are actually going to get paid for the entire job, that the thought of charging them extra, never entered our mind.( And probably never will )

Justin, that part about illegalities is probably true. It has never happened to us and we use a credit card for everything. ( Okay, maybe not the collection plate on Sunday )

P.S. I've said this before: When square went anti-gun, I went anti-square!

I get charged a 3% fee when I use my card to pay almost any bill online.

Paul while I used to agree about getting paid I have since learned otherwise.

I had a chargeback this year even though animals were caught, documented, and customer paid and signed. They won the chargeback and since then I hate them. Cash or check is preferred.

You got it backwards Nate. You get charged when you accept a credit card and you pay nothing when you use one. Since I average 3% back for using one and pay about 2 1/2% for accepting one, it's pretty much a wash.

By the way, we had a charge back too but it paled in comparison to the number of bounced checks. I'll take credit cards every time.

Nate, it's sure nice to know that people have money in the bank in at least one part of the state.

That's funny. Beside Milwaukee I would guess your service area has a much higher income level than mine. Washington, Ozaukee, and Waukesha Counties all got money.

Nate, you ain't wrong! The vast majority of those bounces occur in Milwaukee county and most of the rest from people that have moved from Milwaukee county. Now you buy fur? That's cool!

I posted about a year ago that I wanted to get out of nuisance work and have a sporting good store. Well slowly I am working on making it hapoen and buying fur is another piece of that puzzle.

I am really hoping 2014 is my last year chasing animals.

If you are talking about credit card receipts, they have to go straight to our business account at the bank for tax purposes.
