Pesky,
Just to clarify, are you using the tin snips to grab the bat in the can? Or just using them to prod the bat to get it to fly out?
Also wondering, why no gloves, though I believe this has been asked more than a few times for your videos. I'm assuming your videos are public viewing right, thus johnny public or jill can assume they don't have any worry to do the same thing with no gloves?
This video, would make a better piece for you if you showed proper PPE and could have still detailed all the other aspects of finding bats in can lighting.
From the angle, it looks like the snips were being opened and closed in a way that would grab the bat, can think of about 100 things in my van that would accomplish getting the bat out without grabbing a wing or body part with a cutting edge.
Hope you can let me know on that one, thanks,
Justin

Man, do you know how this hurts? If Pesky is anything like me, he will tell you that when you are wearing gloves and can't see what you are doing, you have twice the chance of getting bitten because you also can't feel what you are doing.
Gloves are fine in daylight, but to be perfectly honest, I wear them for the customer's benefit, not mine. I have been bitten a number of times and gloves would not have solved stupidity.

Paul, I believe we could just put an disclaimer symbol next to any post you make about gloves and being bitten lol!! Honestly I know you don't tend to use em, and yes I know you've been bitten and are still here with us thankfully.
My issue is more what we do and show, and though yes a bite is usually part of a rabies exposure, simple saliva in cuts or scrapes (which we all have on our hands) is all it technically takes, especially if the next time the hands are washed is later at home.
Pesky, thanks for the rest of the video, but did you use the snips to grab the bat? Just curious because again, it seems there are many things that will make that bat bail out without using something with a cutting edge that could damage the wing membrane or break a bone.
By the way, simple rubber gloves are all I'm asking for, nitrile, etc... you don't need heavy gloves that reduce dexterity if your not planning to "mug" something in a way that would allow a bite.

Okay Dave and Justin, I DO wear gloves when handling bats. Besides trying to show customers the proper handling procedures, some of those little suckers are rabid.
Now raccoons is another matter. First of all we have never had a raccoon test positive for rabies in Wisconsin. Pulling up enough fat and fur so they can't turn around inside their skin is tough enough bare-handed. Besides, stuff like that probably only happens once every five years. The truth is, the worst raccoon bite I ever received was from a raccoon in a cage in my truck. How my hand ever wondered through that wire, I still don't know. A normal raccoon bite is not as severe as the bite I got from my grandson. ( and yes, I nailed him and we have never had another episode )
P.S. I was bitten by a gray squirrel twenty years ago and that was the last time I let something with teeth that grow, get close enough to me. You don't even feel it until the blood starts spurting and the air hits it.

I think he was just working with the camera on! I'm sure if we all had cameras on us we would Get cought doing things we probably shouldn't! I Personally wouldn't have gotten down the ladder Back to truck and put gloves on. Nor would I gotten Down to find something batter than the first or only Thing in my pocket! When a guy is In the working mode and has ten diff Jobs on his mind one of the last things we are going to Think of are the things you pointed out!
