I had a client call me about fixing the chimney yesterday . They stated they had a company come in and seal some areas and put bat repellent in the chimney last week to scare the bats out. I told the client that I do not do masonry work. I also told them that the bats could have babies at this time and that that company should have not done anything yet. They stated they had three in the house and did not care as long as they were gone. The company only gave a 60 day warranty. I have had to follow up behind this company before.

My questions is should I turn this company in for doing bat jobs during the birthing period? The other issue is I am sure that this company does not have a pesticide licensed, which I would think you need to apply any type of repellant? Is their a repellant that works for this application or is this company selling snake oil?

Snake oil..... Readily available off the shelf.... Have heard all kinds of good ones this year about fumigants being offered.

The other aspect about turning them in comes down to your own code of ethics. If try are outside a state law I would, but that's just me, I'm sure some folks will say let it lay, or simply not answer.

The fact they are offering a "repellant" plus they are doing it during maternity season seems like try should already be on someone's radar.

Good luck either way.

Justin

Art; I agree with you on not likimg what they are doing. However, I don't know who you would "turn them in to". To my knowledge, there is no inforceable law in Illinois on doing bat work during the birthing period. Maybe for not having a pesticide license. But I don't know who you would turn them in to.

Would it be your dept of ag that gives the pesticide applicators license?

Yes, the Dept. of Ag gives pesticide license. However, finding anyone there that cares about an infraction is hard to do.

That is surprising, I know folks who have run afoul of these laws in a variety of states and it was never a pretty site! (for them anyway)
