I always use a seperate pot for my waxing, I've never melted the wax in the dye water and pulled up through to get my coating. As far as how much you will need for 5 traps, it's not how much will it take just to wax these five but how much will it take to get the wax deep enough in your pot to submerge them. If the pot is wide or big around it will take more to bring it up the sides, stay w/ something just big enough to get the trap in and is narrow that way it won't take much wax to give you the depth. Hope that helps
Later
Matt

Matt got it right, or at least the way i do it, as he said the as long as the trap will fit the container will work, tall and narrow will be the best as long as you traps fit and use the least wax

The safest way is the double-boiler method.
Heat up a big bucket of boiling water (usually what you dyed the traps in).
Place your smaller bucket of wax into the boiling water and let it melt down. Once it's turned liquid, put a trap or two in. It will turn white in places. Leave it in until the white places fade away and it all turns black (assuming your traps are dyed black). This means that the trap has reached the temperature of the wax. This usually takes about 30 seconds. Take it out and let it hang to dry. If you pull it out too soon, the wax won't stick good to the trap.
The double-boiler method helps prevent wax fires, which are very dangerous.
Hope this helps.

I am strongly contemplating buying a roasting oven (like christmas turkey's are cooked in) to do all my waxing in the next year sometime.

No fire, great storage, and room enough for my double LS's
