Hey for those of you that use a mac and iphoto. And if you have a mac and are not using it your missing out.
Well I guess if your not using a mac your missing out. laugh Just kidding. Well not really.
Anyways.
Photobucket has a plugin for uploading picts to photobucket. Really works well.

I still like to keep my picts on photo bucket. At least the ones I think that I might post again in the future. Tman is great but I still like to have my own archived.

FT both those snares I believe were anchored low due to marginal size of brush. The bigger brush behind the kill was pretty ideal and the snares in there were anchored head high or higher for the most part. I like to carry 3 or 4 6' pieces of 9wire when I go into a kill in case I have to stretch way over to a decent anchor. Extension cables would serve the same purpose.

Made it to Cordova (aka Cortucky - Appalachia by the sea) Hardly any wind and only took 33 hours. Passed the fast ferry Chenega, they made it to Juneau under 20 hours. Kinda rolly poley out there, but the best break in the weather. After 2 months or so, finally heading back home to Homer for 3 days before having to go back to work in Ketchikan for 2 weeks in ship yard.

Isn't Gamagatsu Japanese for "very expensive?"

Tom something that I have picked up from your sets is something I have not done before with coyote, fox or lynx. Double setting side by side. I would normally fence it off tighter. By doubling up you can really keep it open looking and still cover with snares. For lynx and fox anyways I would have placed brush and funneled them. Not having gone after wolves it is good to see this type of set. I am sure the openness is a plus. I noticed the openness on the videos lb just posted in the almighty video thread also.

Len in that particular situation there were actually 2 trails there. The main trail, of course, is going to get snared. Take a look at the first kill pic, the one with the jaw bone, and you can see the fork in the trail back towards the kill. You can also make out faded tracks in the second snare pic which looks the other direction. So since there were 2 trails there were going to be 2 snares!
Had the 2nd, fainter, trail not been there I may well have planted a fairly subtle branch in that hole, or I may have just set another snare; not sure.
The thought at the time was that maybe, just maybe that if the pack returned and approached the kill from that direction, they might get excited and try to race in there a bit and maybe get 2 at once, more or less simultaneously. Or conversely if they came in from the back and got hung up, perhaps 2 would try to charge out side by side, although fleeing I would expect them to exit more shotgun style and scatter. Whatever!
None of that withstanding it seems that wolves, I guess because they are bigger, longer legs, etc., are plenty willing to crash/push/force through ground cover etc that may divert smaller critters AND there are plenty of times when they will push right through the dense spruce trees which to me is the most ideal location to be able to set snares for them.

I would say that Gamakatsu is the word for catch more fish..

Those hooks are sharp, hook deeper and thus hold better. IMO nothing easily or commercially available compares to the quality, not mustad, not eagle claw, not matzuo.... Owners are real close, but still not as good...

Another thing Len regarding double setting I am not going to change it up much by fencing esp that close to the action zone they have good memories!

I've been using daiichi x point, size 4 steelhead hooks for sockeye the last few years. Tips dull on the rocks (they all do), but that short, stout shank holds them tight.

You are right. That moose kill I found earlier this year in the jungle was a prime example. They were bashing their way through DENSE blueberry brush like it was nothing, one after another. The openings were little more than a snout width across. You could have probably hung 1/2 inch cable in there and not seen it...but like your perfect looking setup they never came back to mine either.

Those photos show that very well. I had that epiphany (that you could use several loops instead of "fencing" off a larger opening) several years ago, but someone had to show it to me. I probably NEVER would have figured it out by my own dumb self!

When I first started doing it, I had some rather immediate and dramatic results.

I now think it is one of the most important tactics available to the serious snare man who wants to catch wolves.

I made sure the tactic was featured prominently in the Alaska Wolf Trapping Manual!

Pete

Got the manual and DVD. Need to revisit it. Just haven't made the commitment to go after the buggers yet. I alway get a renewed interest when I start seeing others catching them. They are just out of the way enough it doesn't work in my routine. But I do need to add at least one to my wall.
Thanks Pete.
