I am planning on looking at some Black Hole attachment tomorrow and wanted to see if there was any general feedback on them. I know Griz' Getters are the best but have a limited budget and can utilize some existing traps.

I talked with the trapper responsible for the following numbers.

He first started searching for a dog-proof trap because all the neighboring farms had coon hounds running them and he wanted to get along with the houndsman.

The trapper first bought 6 Black Holes.
  • With those 6 Black Holes he caught 126 of the 500 coon he trapped for that season.

He then purchased 250 Black Holes.
  • The 2nd yr, running 80 stops/day on a 24 hr check he caught 450 coon in 9 checks.
  • That was 450 out of 700 raccoon trapped that yr.
  • the Black Holes were catching at least double what the other Dog Proof traps were. So he decided to use only Black Holes the next yr.

The third yr he caught the same amount of coon (700) using only Black Holes but with 6 weeks less effort.
  • It was very muddy that yr and he didn’t like losing time resetting traps that were a mud-ball.
  • So he bought 200 more Black Holes so that he had a fresh trap ready to go after a catch, not unlike running conibears. The mudded up ones are then cleaned up back at the house and ready to rotate.

He has used Red O’Hearns coon bait and a fish bait of his as well as fruit based baits and lures.

He has yet to catch one cat.

3 years, 1,276 raccoon and no cats.

He has seen cats sitting next to the Black Hole watching it like they were expecting the fish to jump out but that is it.

Perhaps consider giving Mr. Bill Rudy, the inventor of Black Holes, a call at (402) 737-3397

I purchased 6 at the NTA to try this season, cause there is a few places I can use them where I wouldnt be able to use anything else. I had planned on just using some of the 1 1/2`s I already had but while I was passing an looking at Cumberlands booth they had Duke 1 1/2`s on sale for less then $4 each. So I figgured for a little less then $10 each for a good coon dogproof trap Id go for it. I got them all put together an bout all I need to do is speed dip them an they will be ready for the line in a few more months. I will post my results with them as well as the couple lil griz getters I have. Ill try to get a pic an post in a bit. hope this helps!

Sorry, no pics with catches using the blackholes. I didn't have a digital camera back then. I will look thru my film pics to see if I have any. They catch just like the lil grizz traps. I've caught coon by both front feet with them but mostly right across the pad on the front foot. The best thing is they cant chew below the jaws with them. The foot is protected. I baited them just like I do for the lilgrizz. I got them to speed things up from using the egg traps. When I got the lilgrizz Im just switching over to them. The only place that had them was Ludy Sheda in Iowa when I bought them. Now cumberlands has them as posted above.

looking at the one pic, is there a trigger in the black hole that the coon trips? Wondering what makes it dogproof?

here is a pic I took last fall

only pic I took of a catch in the black hole. I think I caught about 20 raccoons

they work real well right a the openings of large culverts, animal has place to hide, kinda and passerby's can't see them

yes there is a trigger inside. its also made to be pulled up instead of pushed down. Thats part of what makes it dog proof, the other reason is a dog cant get his paw in the little hole to pull the trigger up.

The coon will reach in to get the bait an will feel the trigger an try to get it out, thus fireing the trap on his leg. He cant chew casues his foot is inside the black hole.

Does anyone know what the minimum jawspread is for using the black hole?

The trigger system is just like on the Lilgrizz trap. down in the black hole. Critter has to reach in to trip the trigger otherwise the trap wont fire.

They will fit the 1.5 and 1.75 traps. They advertise that they fit most 1.5's but I dont know which ones they wont work in. I have sleepycreeks that I used mine in. My reason for switching is that I could carry a dozen Lilgrizz in one hand vs. a doz 1.5 traps. Financial situations differ and this is about as economical version for dog proofing a trap there is. They do work as I've used them and from statements above.

Flatset,
I am thinking of ordering some of these, the traps I plan on installing them on are not currently center swiveled, would you recommend center swiveling them?
