I would use a cage trap and wire the door up. Keep feeding 'em until they get used to it and than lower the hammer. Rats are neophobic and it takes them awhile to get accustomed to new stuff. x2

Use the Rat Zapper. They never seem to wise up the to electronic ones. I am a big fan of the rat zappers and sold and installed many of them in restaurant accounts in my Pest Control days. I always sold them at the end of a rat job, installed the lil flashing red lights where they will be noticed and used them for future rat problem detection. They were always a great upsell during and after the rat job. I have read a lot of good advice here just hit em hard with all you got. I have always tried to exclude the entry ways and try to trap them all out inside until they are nothing but a memory. Rick Federation is right keep em guessing and you will eventually see an end.

Might try a rat size weasel box. Square wood tube, holes on each end, bait in the middle, with #1's under the holes.

What brand of rat poison are you using? It could be that the attractant isn't very good, this makes a huge difference with some rats. If none have ever eaten it I wouldn't think that they would be suspicious of it. I use Fastrac Blox. It has a single feeding kill that is fairly quick, have had great results. i use "tom cat" bait station

If these smart rats will not come to the bait then if you can find trails i would blind set with small dbl springs. And I like the thought of shooting them but then again I just like to shoot. where can i find a sensitive enough double sping trap? would that be a mole type of trap? or could i find it at a gun/hunting store?
