So if they don't chew spruce or pine then why use it for bait?

The bait is tied to the conibear. You don't want the beaver to eat the support pole holding a conibear.

Yes, the bait is tied to the conibear jaws. It has no chance to eat it once it's caught. And the support pole is a dry stick. They do not chew them, or not very often. And when they do thats when the safety wire comes in handy.

I'm catching the rats in houses along the way with #1 Jumps with cables on them. I catch a few rats every year on polesets, but pretty rare with that large of snares.

I don't have to alter the BMI Slide Frees.They are manufactured for specific sizes of cable, and now all have a larger hole in the bottom also. Took awhile but BMI is now putting a larger hole on the bottom, which makes them move alot better.

TFT I have yet to find a woody tasting beaver....but then I have no idea what Poplar bark tastes like either .

Rare, butI have seen them cut down pine, spruce, fir and even hemlock. All small trees except for the hemlock that had some bark chewed off. Further North in a cedar thicket the house was made of cedar, and the seed pile was cedar.
One lone beaver out back of my house a few years ago was going by poplar white birch and white maple and cutting red oak?--I Think he just liked a challenge!
I find the web footed beaver to be real great eating. Usually i make a stew, and don't care if it's from a young or old beaver. I do nothing to the meat but cut as much fat off as possible. As a roast I soak it in a little baking soda over night, then roast it as you would beef. It has it's own flavor, but the soda makes it a little milder flavor.
At our local Sportsmans Club it was asked for volunteers to cook the next meal. I thought of making beaver stew for the group, but wonder howmany would turn their nose up to the thought of beaver. --One thing for sure, I know darn well all the Frenchman in the club eat beaver.

Grilled beaver back straps were awesome...had em at the MTAPHA convention last year. They were supper !! I like the stewed beaver too crock pot beaver is a heart warming thing.

It is a new set up 3 fingers, one I am making and just got the patent work for. It is called the "Snare Spider" and is depth adjustable from the top. I always had the devil's own time messing with poles and getting the depth right, so, a little head scratching and here she be. I can toss a dozen in the pack basket or under the seat of the Skandic and run.



I had always heard that beaver will hide for a few days after hearing the spud over their heads.....Not always true!

Now that sure is different! Snares are a problem when it doesn't freeze and your hole opens up and the rodent gets up on the ice. Keeping than narrrow slit is good as long as the ice doesn't melt completely.

I like your idea big twin. I can see how you could really decrease the time spent setting traps by pre-setting your spiders which would be very handy, especially on those windy days. Brrrrrrrrrr!

I agree with Hornhunter, they will need more lateral support on the ice and especially during warmer spells. I always anchor to a log or branch. The more beaver I catch the more I think my minimum size should be 2" diameter and 4' long. I really don't like to think of how many I've lost because I wasn't using a big enough anchor on top of the ice.

I have only had one waiting for me on top of the ice. I had made a catch and reset in the same spot. Figuring on the 4 degree night we were about to have to lock her in solid. But, another quick catch allowed him to escape..... After a catch I just put a couple sticks under the spider until she freezes in.

On the bright side, the spider acts as a really good drag!
