I've tried the herring roe a few times. It's popular, (here in SE), to set out spruce boughs in the tidal areas the herring are spawning in. They will then spawn on the branches, which are then retrieved. All I could taste was salty turpentine. YUK!

Just doing what I want now.

Saw article about that in the Anch Daily News. Best of luck.

I remember what happened at Barrow when the gray whales got trapped in the ice there a few years ago.

There was a pod that came up the Yukon a couple years before I landed here...they said they went up as far as Pilot Station (about 100 mi up the river) and turned and went back down,we also get lost walruss every so often, there was a dead one across the river from the village last year. and we are 70 mi up from the Bering sea.

Kusko, I go beaver trapping about 3 hours above where they are laugh
We saw a seal up in the same area as the whales are during moose season got a few pictures but it looks like a dot in the water frown First time I ever saw a seal that far up above the tides and in the fresh water.
I guess NOAA is tracking them somehow so wont be surprised if there are people all over on Sunday when I head for the cabin for beaver but once I get by everyone I should be all alone and peaceful.
Herring Roe on kelp is great I don't care for it on spruce branches, I prefer it when I get my hands on some low grade stuff the processors get rid of because it broke almost full skeins salted and frozen no vegetation to get in the way. Dipped in seal oil or better yet soy sauce. Sure hope someone goes walrus hunting pretty soon would love to have some with the beluga that is already in the freezer

O-man its common for seals to come into the fresh water around here most go seal hunting in the river not the ocean, you can take a day trip around here and usualy sea seals (70 mi inland)they are eating the whitefish that run in the fall,we dont see them in the summer or spring at all. so thats what I asume they are eating, could be following the last of the salmon up as well.
I have heard of them as far up as Russion Mission and that must be 150 mi from the coast,
we also get Beluga up this way some years.

and soys sauce is good on the Roe I like that and fried whole skiens are the bomb smile

be having some Bowhead for dinner tonight smile

We saw a seal above St Mary's last week moose hunting. About 25 miles upriver from Jeff.
The students from St Mary's just got back from a school trip to the coast to hunt seals and whales. They came back with 17 seals with 5 boats. One of the teachers got some great gopro head cam footage of the kids throwing harpoons.

This year they got 7 moose, one for each boat during the Sept Moose hunt. Pretty awesome fall for the students. The school bought two new boats from Emmonak this summer. There using them to travel to sports as well rather than paying for airplane charters. Cool deal.

Interesting how far up into the fresh water the seals go regularly there vs here we seldom see them more than 5 miles into the fresh water and do not seem to have the numbers that you do up there. I know when my son visits up in Alukanuk with the girlfriend he loves going seal hunting

Guys dip netting in the Copper River down in the Canyon caught one in a dip net this year, and I guess they are regularly seen that far up chasing fish.

We get them regularly up here and we are at least 30 miles from salt. I've also seen them at the Narrows or second rapids and that is another 10 miles past here. They have to ride the big tides to get past our place. The good news is that its an indicater there are fish in the river because they usually follow them up.
