Do any of you spend time growing mushrooms from the kits you can purchase?
Witch kind have you had luck with and are there any that you would saty away from?

The only wild ones that we can count on find almost every year are oysters and usually sulfer shelf. We'd like to grow some of our own.
Thanks

I have grown the portabella and brown button. Personally I like the portabella better and probably got a gallon ziplock bag stuffed full. They were fun to grow but at 35 bucks per kit after shipping, it is a little expensive.

Can't you save the spores and start you another bunch on another batch of mediun. The people that raise shrooms keep their batches going from one bunch to the next.

Just buy the prepackaged bags off the net, and save the headache.

The packaged stuff is what is so exspensive, that is why I thought you might get it done cheaper by having your own spores and mycelium to restart your next batch with.

Well there is a reason for the cost of the packaged stuff, it is not as simple as planting a seed and watching it grow.

I grow ALOT of oyster mushrooms every year, along with a few Shitake and King Stropharia. Currently have three varities of oyster mushrooms under cultivation. Most of my oysters and shitake are on logs with the King Stropharia being on beds of wood chips.

Started with spawn from Field and Forest mushrooms here in Wisconsin (they are on line, just google them), but now am fooling round with raising my own spawn.

Buying the spawn and using your own logs is ALOT cheaper than the table top kits.

I dry alot each year and can some. Of course, there is nothing better than fresh mushrooms fried in butter with a little salt and garlic!
