Just curious...Seems early in the season I'll find them in pine then Oak later on.I was out this weekend and hunted a white pine / oak forest and came up empty. The only mushrooms I found were some jack-o-lanterns.

I was out this past Sunday. I found about a dozen,I was checking out a new area. I find mine along old logging roads that they have covered up some roots of trees along the road. For some reason very often there is a hemlock tree within sight of the shrooms? I have not had very good luck finding them away from the old roads? It seems they are growing on decaying wood buried under the road? When I say old roads, these are often over a hundred years old with no dirt left to see, just moss and leaf cover. I do find them in mossy areas under white pines quite often. Fried my first bunch of the year up with deer tenderloin and added a side of steamed SwissChard. YUM!!

No problem stan, just wanted someone else to verify they where chanterelles. I fried some in olive oil the other day and they were pretty good.

The only look alike(sorta) is the false chantrelle.Slice one, chantrelles are white thru the center, false chantrelles are a solid color all the way thru. There is a false chanterelle, Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca, (some books list this as "edible with caution" and a mushroom called the Jack o' Lantern, Omphalotus olearious, and it is poisonous and responsible for most of the mistaken chanterelle poisonings. The Jack O Latern is sometimes also refered to as a false chanterelle a novice though can mistake any number of shrooms for a chanterelle though including salmon waxy, orange latex milky, golden-gilled gerronema and even a gilled bolete. Chantrelles just started to flush here and they are small and dry and few WE NEED RAIN!!!!!!
