I remember my Grandma using Chicory as a coffee substitute... something she said she did a lot during the Great Depression.
Guess its time to try it again ;-)

Been harvesting dandelion root for at least 12 years now. Its a good stable market for me.
Best place to collect it is just when a farmer plows his field, just walk behind the plow and pick it up. The farmers around here call me when there ready to plow...no kidding...lol

I have never bought any dandelion root or Herb, but from what I can tell about it the tops and roots are saleable at about 50 cents a lb. on the tops and 50 cents a lb. on the root. Does this sound about close to the correct price ohbuyer II?

brennan, dandelions must be washed to remove all dirt and debris......then lay the roots on window screens or drying racks made up of wire mesh...you want the air to circulate to prevent mold and to promote drying to all sides.......when completly dry...store in paper sacks or cardboard boxes and keep in a cool dry area.
never store your roots in plastic...plastic draws moisture and you could ruin your roots.

dndelions are used for coffee substitutes and are also used in diet pills.

in europe there is a soft drink made from dandelions and burdock ......and i've heard that there is a compound in dandelions that can be used to treat nervousness.

dandelion root is a registerd drug in canada as a diuretic.

That pretty much answered all my questions fox. But do you think chicken fence would work just as well as wire mesh? Also, do you think selling coffee 'roots' to people would do better then going and selling it at 50 cents a pound? Thanks fox!

X2 on pics of dandelions drying.

in my opionion chicken fence would not work as well because some of the smaller roots could fall thru.

i currently do not have any dandelions drying right now...but i'll try to post some pics of some drying methods later.

thanks for this information! I have been thinking about how much land is being taken out of circulation somewhere in South America just to feed my addiction to caffeine. I like an espresso in the morning followed by a full pot of coffee for the day. times 360... times ??? (years i got left)

Just batter and fry the flowers. They are great! My wife thinks they taist like coliflower with a little bitter taist. Just dont wash them or let them sit around long before you cook them.
