Degrease then soak in salt-water for a day or so, rinse with clean water and let it sit outside till done.

a solution of vinegar and water for 2-3 days should do the trick

I run them through the diswasher 2-3 times, then hang them outside for a couple more.

He said they were 110's that would make them water traps. There are several ways to degrease them. The dish washer (if ya can get away with it!) Spray can of brake parts cleaner(it's alcohol based and leaves no residue)or gas in a pan then soap and water.Paint thinner and a pan and brush then the soap and water.
Dry them well then spray paint them,if ya use rustoleum paint it will stay on pretty good. Let it dry well rustoleum takes a day or so depending on the temp where you dry them.
I wouldn't paint traps for canine trapping they need the clean, dye, wax thing, or skip the dye and clean em and wax em like I do.RD

No, you do not need to rust them. Canine traps are set with dirt over them. Degrease, dye if you wish, and wax them.

This could help...

Trap preparation for new traps:

First take the traps inside run them through the dishwasher with the same amount of dishwasher soap you use for really dirty dishes be sure to keep the chains up out of any moving parts...

Then dip them in a mixture of 8oz. white vinegar to 1 1/2 gal. water...

lay them out in the grass and 7 hours later they have a light coat of rust ready to be dyed...

dye them in logwood trap dye wax them and ready for the trap line...

I dye them a dozen at a time by boiling them in logwood dye over a turkey fryer burner. I use one 1lb. bag of dye to 3 1/2-4 gal. of water this will do 4-5 dozen traps before you'd want to add another bag of dye. Boil them about 10-15min. on a medium boil. Then hang them to dry. I heat the wax in a large stockpot it takes only enough wax to cover each trap. Heat it til it is completely melted and starting to smoke (turn the burner down so it doesn't burst into flames and keep the lid handy if it did), on the same burner. Be sure the traps are completely dry or the wax will boil violently! then I dip each trap in the wax one at a time.(I use a stiff piece of #9 wire with a hook on the end to dip the traps in the wax.) I leave it in the wax until the "sizzling" stops (about 30 sec. - 1 min., the trap needs to be heated to the same temp. as the wax for it to coat correctly not too thick) Then I pull the trap out, shake off the excess wax and hang it to dry. As soon as it is cool it can be set.
BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN USING THE WAX IT IS FLAMMABLE IF YOU ARE A MINOR GET AN ADULT TO SUPERVISE!!!

The dye and wax is available through most any trapping supply places.

For used traps take them to the car wash and power wash off all the dirt and loose rust then skip the dishwasher and vinegar.

I didn't read all of ADC's post, because I've seen it numerous times, but I've found that dipping the traps in that vinegar/water solution several times, like once every hour for 5 or 6 hours, it gets a faster/better coat of rust. Just my findings....

Well.........I've never used the Water and Vinegar but I bet it would work. I use Liquid Clorine, the same stuff that people use in Swimming Pools. Just dip them in the liquid, pull them out and wait 4 mins. Spray them off VERY GOOD, and they'll be rusty the next day.

Step by step
1 place traps in dishwasher
2 wash several times "on high heat for steam"
3 leave in dish washer for wife to find
4 disconnect dishwasher "due to the amount of rust in the machine"
5 go to lowes and purchase new dishwasher
6 install new machine.
Thats how I did it \:\)

I used the vinegar method on some Sleepy Creek 1 3/4 last year and it worked real well. Caught my first fox in a foothold using one. I just filled a 5 gallon bucket up with water, poured in a large bottle of cheap vinegar, let em soak in the vinegar solution for about 4 hours, then took em out, and left em outside for about 2 days in some leaves. Had a nice thin coat of rust that took logwood crystal dye real well.
