I was just in the Archives reading about how to make the lure, and I have a question.
First you boil the trimmings, then you place in a jar to age. Do you add the water you boiled them in or use fresh water???

Use the water you boiled them in. The water is what you use as lure.

Naw Ray,

You can boil skulls in it... LOL....

Boil them down about an hour or two... making sure to keep them covered with water..

Pour all the liquid and hooves in a jug or jar and add enough water to fill your jug to about 5/6 full, not all the way to the top... put the mess in full sun and let it set...

Make sure to keep the dogs from getting in it.....

This stuff is strong....

I have heard it makes a good bear bait... I know it makes a good mock scrape for deer....

Give it a try.... no guarantees..

Nope Ray,

I haven't... my Grandfather used burro hooves... he had 3 or 4 burros on the place... why I don't know, but they were pretty wild, and he would tie them every once in a while and clip their feet.. and use the hooves for bait, if he could keep his old dog from eating them...

We use to buck those burros when I was a kid... they would throw a fit, and you sure had to be quick once you hit the ground, they would eat your rear end up if they could get a hold of you... Granddad would clown for us with an ax handle....

If dogs will eat the hooves, I bet they would work....

The "fresh" hoof trimmings have a great attraction to canines both domestic and wild as chew treats or may just meet a instinctive nutritional value of some sort.I believe its the frog of the hoof trimmings that has the most interest to canines.

However once sun rendered down or the boiled water extract it can turn into some nasty sewer smelling material after they age. Just exercise some caution when using the material as it may not be what you think it will be depending on how your batch turns out.

Some material I have smelled will certainly give a good rubbing or rolling instinct if applied in a fashion to initiate such a response.

I do not have any personal experience using the material other then that posted here and the info shared through others having used it sporadically.

fresh hooves or soaked hooves are the best to use... I agree, but the liquid off the hooves will attract K9... it is not worth a durned for cats, but I do know trappers who have taken cats with it..... I really can't believe it, but that is what they told me...

It is NOT a replacement for a good commercial lure, but a change up...

I usually use mine about 18 inches up on a wad of wool or poly fill, or down a hole with a grass wad with a small chunk of hoof in the hole also...

Thanks y'all. I felt as if I could use the water I boiled them in. It just wasn't stated in the article. And yes, I'll use a pot "just for them."

offshore,

I know a guy to takes to hooves and cuts them into small pieces then puts them in glycine... he said it worked better than rotting them down...

I know another trapper who melted bacon grease and fish grease and mixed the horse hoof liquid and hooves with it, said it worked good also....

That is about all I know..... heck, I can't catch a cold..

I made about 3 gallons, five years ago. I have 3 gallons left. Once you take a pint or so out to use, replace with fresh water and let sit in the sun some more. It will never run out. Haven't caught any coyotes yet, but have caught both red and grey fox with it. Just a squirt down a hole so they won't roll on it. I've also tested it on domestic dogs just to see their reaction and foot placement. They sniff it for quite a while, shuffling their feet back and forth where the pan should be.
And for Pete's sake, don't bring it in the house or spill in your truck.

Bulletbox remember when you bought some to Dublin and we spilled some in the parking lot. Sunday when we were cleaning up, the city boys were looking for a sewer leak.

Let it age as long as you can... if you need to use it this year... say a couple of months, shake the jug good before pouring some off, then add water back to the mix to fill the container... it should be black as tar...

It should be black... get it in full sun, and let her set...

It should turn before trapping season... if not, give it a good shake before you pour some off...

If you have it in a glass jar, lossen the lid some or it might explode...

If in plastic, you still might want to lossen it some, just to be safe... I had a cooking oil jug break once, you talk about a mess.... caught another one right before it blew... it was as big as a beach ball... LOL....
