How effective is vaseline from keeping fly eggs out of bait? I seem to remember Bob J or someone posting about that a while back. I just got some bait in the shed that I globbed heavy dose of vaseline in the threads of the jars to give it a try.

Teflon thread tape works good and a lot less of a mess than vaseline!

That's what Nick likes so well about your baits! \:D

Unless you keep it cool won't it turn to liquid and your protection would run away?

That's what I am wondering. I usually just bury it, but would rather not if I can get away with it. My fly proof cupboard in the stinky shed is no longer fly proof. Haven't taken the time to figure that out yet.

that sounds like a good alternative. One thing about vaseline is flys dont like laying eggs on it.

If you are considering yourself to be someone of influence and importance, just try ordering someone elses dog around sometime.

Vaseline works very well. As Rich stated flies wont lay eggs on it. It is best to keep the containers in the shade so as not to allow the vaseline to melt. If you apply it neatly it wont be very messy. Then just get a shop towel and wipe it off when working with the container to eliminate the greasy material.

If you get the vaseline that comes in the squeeze tubes it can be applied more surgically without alot of mess. You only need to apply on the lid interior rim or just on the container rim.

A good shot of residual aerosol insecticide sprayed on the rim area once the lid is closed will keep the random flies off as extra insurance.Or hang a fly catch bag or commercial fly strip in your aging area and this will further protect you from the pesky flies.

By using a breather gas off system such as a petcock, wine breather, or a tire value stem core you will eliminate most fly interest as the gas odor will be dispersed at random intervals so it is not fogging the immediate area with alot of decayed odor.

Thanks for the info Rich & Bob

Like shown here in this picture ... I also like to cut the end out of an old sock roll it down over itslef and stretch around the rim. The lid is semi loose and can rock up and down on the jar threads. Alowing gases to escape. If flies blow it they will be on the outside. This will also work on square and round buckets of various sizes when done with a t shirt. But find the valve stem and large plastic bag easier and more effective on buckets.

Putting the whole thing in a large heavy mil plastic bag and securing it tightly ... take a pin and poke two maybe three small holes. The gases escape into the bag and will vent slowly through the pinholes.

I keep all of my stinky stuff in metal cabinets out of direct sunlight. Gets warm at times but no flies. They try hard sometimes! lol \:\)

These methods have worked for me!
