i agree with you. Michael Howard has a dog that weighs 80+ pounds on a chain that has medium duty swivels in the chain and they haven't come close to breaking. this dog is on the chain every day not for just a few hours.

No argument here! I use tons of #2 straight link and never had a failure. I use it on all my traps with the exception of my #1 ls. Max

Whats nice about #3 heavy duty american chain is all the links are welded and are pretty consistant, where as the cheaper #2 it isn't always so,you need to check each link to make that it's welded.Another good chain I like is the straight link that comes on the bridgers #2 & #3 coils.

Another thing nice about quality straight link is it lasts a long time, also no kinking, especially if it's twist link, they both lay better in a trap bed than the twin loop dog chain. One thing with the twin loop when trapping coyotes is they can really demolish and bend up the twin loop where it needs to be replaced, don't have to worry about that with straight #3 chain.I never had a coyote rip twin loop apart, but close,we have a 24 hr trap check,if it would have been a longer trap check I wouldn't doubt that I would have lost a few coyotes with the twin loop.

One thing to remember,a coyote isn't a domesticated dog, sure big dogs test a chain, but nothing like a coyote tearing into it with his teeth and jaws.

Just my buck two eighty.

heavier chain on coyote traps is not to prevent breaking the chain, its to cushion the shock, and to tire the animal out, keep the drag on the ground better etc.,a long chain is a bit of a shock resistant tool just in that he is slowed a bit as the heavy chain is lifted and then becomes taut, try it your self with a 20 foot log chain, i used 5 feet of no.5 chain on several dozen yote traps for several years to keep from destroying the nice yukka plants i made the sets into, they tired ole wiley pretty well.

What's #3 straight link?
There are NO standard sizes in the chain industry.
You'd be amazed at the number of chain samples that claim to be # 3 straight link, # 2 twist link, or what ever.
If you are ordering chain, ask for some 6" samples. Most chain makers will gladly furnish you with samples. The compare these samples to the actual chain you want.
I even know one highly respected trapping supply dealer that steadfastly maintains that double loop chain (swing porch chain) is twist link. It is not, and he refuses to replace what he sends you with what you order.
Be careful what you order when it comes to chain.
Adios,
45/70,

I use nothing but no.3 american chain on my coyote traps. Not because the no.2 won't hold, but I've never seen no.3 kink up and like stated above,a heavier chain will help wear a coyote down better. Also it's basicly a life time chain....I've never had to replace one yet.Buy the best and cry once!!
