do u have better results for fox and coyote with fresh meat or tainted meat, because you would think you would catch a lot more possums and skunks with tainted meat.

I taint some of my "THEIR" not there, meat.
I'll taint venison for canids. I keep beaver meat as fresh as possible for cats. I learned a heap of years ago, that 'cats prefer a fresher bait.
Adios,

Tainting bait improves the working response of fox and coyote. Ace

i think im just gonna taint a couple jars then have some fresh meat too, because i've had a lot of different responses. yesterday at the PA convention there was this guy who did a demo and he swore by fresh bait always, and he caught hundreds of foxes and coyotes every year. but i realize every trapper has there own opinions and im gonna have to find my own. lol.

i think it depends alot on what is added to the bait, as far as just some meat in the hole i has this one time, i had a large 5000 head hog finisher complain about coyotes, he did not care about their presence as much as the mess they made, i went out to his dead pile to look and their was thousands of pounds of dead pork laying around from 40 pounds to 240 pounds at a lump, the coyotes were eating a little of the fresh pork but where they really caused a problem was where he would cover the pile up every couple weeks with dirt from his loader, they would then dig enormous holes into this fresh dirt and crawl into this stinking mess and tear out chunks of rotten pork, drag it off a ways and eat the meat leaveing bones scattered all over the farm, some even on the county roads, i shoveled the holes shut to stall for time as it was 2 weeks before prime up, they dug them back out, the owner mixed in barbed wire with the dirt and filled the holes and they dug new ones, the stench comin out of these holes was awesome, after 2 weeks i finally set the section up, and nailed lots of stinking and i mean stinking coyotes, cut them open and they were full of that rotten pork, i got every one of them on getzens bait in dirtholes, and anybody that ever used getzens bait knows it stinks worse than ten piles of dead hogs.

One advantage to tainting bait is that canines want to dig it out to roll in. If they were not hungry they might not bother with fresh meat. Ace

One generally taints the 1" cubes of bait until they are tainted and grey color about half way through the cube with the inner half still pink colored. I do this in the Spring when weather is cooler and it takes about 3 weeks that time of year. I'm sure in the heat of Summer the time would be much less. Ace

I'm a grinder not a cuber lol \:\)

Asa - I'm just curious and this is just a good a time to ask ... do you think ground vs cubed emits odors differently?

taint the meat in distilled water i like cubes over ground and the bonus of using distilled water with it also acts like a lure

$20.00 trap, a $1.00 stake, probably $1.00 in pan cover, bait, urine, and lure, Not to mention gas etc. All for a $10.00 coyote.Priceless!!!!!

I was at the demo and I believe you are talking about Mark June's demo. He said he likes to use fresh not tainted but he catches mostly coyotes. Remember, he said he caught 4 fox in the ten or so years out west.

ya sorry bout that i was just getting the point acrossed that he catches a lot of predators. i thought his demo was great, i bought some of his fox frenzy and fox urine, i was talking to him after the demo and he said that u dont even need the bait with those 2 things. so i might not even mess around with the meat if this stuff works.

ok i understand you want to "taint" the meat, not let ot rot, but what is the worst that can happen if you let your meat rot, really nasty and smelly. im makeing my own bait for the first time this year and any and all info is helpful. also what different kinds of meat do you use, mine is mostly deer cause thats what i hunt the most

the short version:

usually the ranker it is it will attract even more non targets and create a different response from your target such as rolling

opinions will no doubt differ
