I personally dont weld the shocksprings and havent had a problem yet. But, if you have the time and tools to go ahead and weld it im sure that would work better. I do dye mine along with the trap

If your using the heavy duty j hooks you dont need to, but its always a good idea, i rust my springs a little and dip them along with the trap.

If you are going to use them inline weld them or someday you might be sorry.Once installed they are part of the trap chain so just treat with the trap.

Yep weld the washers. If you don't want to weld them or can't JC will for a couple bucks a dozen. If you don't use the washers the rivets tend to bind in the hole making it easier for the rivet to get openned. That is why he has them in there. Everything JC does has a well thought out or experianced reason for being done that way.

Lets answer your question by example. Take a 18" length of rope and put an end in each hand and jerk them apart. The force you feel when it jerks to a stop is how the animal pulls the stakes from the ground or pulls their foot free of the trap. Now cut the rope in half and put an in-line spring in the middle of the rope. When you jerk them apart this time the spring acts as a shock absorber and cuts the force on both ends significantly. The springs limits the animals ability to apply enough force to allow the animal to pull free of the trap or work the stake out of the ground. Hope this helps explain why they are used. An animal can exert a tremendous amount of force on the chain and components of the trap trying to free themselves. If their is any weak chain links, swivels, j hooks, or jaw springs the result could be the loss of the animal and maybe the trap. By utilizing the in-line springs your reducing the possibility of component failure and most important of unduly injuring the animal.

I use jc conner shock springs on all my canine traps. I replace the washers with mb crunch proof swivels. And i weld ALL connections from superstake end to base plate. It goes superstake, then a mighty s-hook,then 16in. of mb#3 chain, then a mbcrunch proof swivel, then shock spring, then mb crunch proof swivel, then 2 #3links,then a mighty s-hook hooked to the d-ring. Sounds complicated but it's not. This allows you to tuck the shock spring under the trap frame. I drive mine into the ground till 1st swivel from the stake end is flush, then pull up to set it. Hope this helps any... and good luck
