I have heard the reference to using baking soda to "color" snares. Could someone give me the proper instruction on this, OR,,,,,, give me recommendations for other methods they use????

The chemical reaction between the baking soda and snare cable causes the end product to have a dull greyish color.

As for exact amounts of water & baking soda, that'll depend on your water volume etc. I can tell ya it doesn't really take all that much. In about 5 gallons of water you can use less than half or quater of a small fridge pack.

I must admit I often skip this and hang new cable, but also just cold soak the cable or snares sometimes. I have even tied off a spool of cable to a rope and dropped it into my pond to let it age/discolor.

Hey, it works!

After building new snares, I will boil them in water in a pot on the stove at least twice to get all the oil off the cable. Then I will put about a half cup of baking soda in the clean water and then boil them again, this time I will boil them for at least 30 minutes in the baking soda, and then I will take some out and see if it has discolored them about what I want if not I will put them back into the water and boil them a littl longer to get the color the way I want. I hope this will help you.

I also have painted them with Krylon paint after boiling them to get the oil off, I have had good luck with the painted ones too. If you decide to paint them get them painted and hang them out side for a month or so to get rid of the paint smell.

I don't boil snares anymore because I found the cable gets stiffer and the removal of the oils from inside the cables will over time promote corrosion/rust from the inside out, which severely weakens the cable. I never liked the chalky feel of the cable either.

Say for example to set the snare this season and it doesn't connect, you'll save it til next season to use. By then the corrosion will have begun, at least in my climate. It may or may not hurt a thing that season depending on the severity of the rust but if you didn't connect again by the second year it will be much weaker cable and very stiff again at least in my climate. Soooo...

Now I just coil the snares together in dozens, spray each side with a contrasting color of flat camo spray paint* (LIGHTLY so as not to effect the snares performance) and hang them outside to air out for a week or two.

*Same paint as is used on tree stands for deer hunting

OR - better yet, buy yourself a can of Brown (looks green) Formula 1 and mix it as the directions say or a bit thinner. I then vary from the directions to save time, I stack a dozen snares together, dip them all at once, let them drip a bit and toss them onto a piece of cardboard. I can do a dozen snares in 20 seconds. Let them dry for an hour or two and they are ready to set.

ADC you're right, boiling snare make them stiff cable, the lock become less slider for closing, and the shape of the snare change too, often when I'm built my snare work great and after boiling them ,doesn't the same thing.I don't like speed dip with snare, so when you just paint snare(no dye) , you dont have refusal with this ?

Creek trapper gave you the link. Like I said though I DO NOT boil the snares before I use it and one coat is all it ever takes. That one pint will do several hundred snares. It mixes with water not gas like other dips so there is no added expense.

None that I have ever noticed. Give them ample time to air out and they are fine.

I'm with ADC on the F-1. Sometimes I will dip half of the rolled up snares in brown F-1 and the other half in tan or green. They disappear when set.

Heres where to get Formula 1.
