My trapping is typical southeastern U.S. with 80% pine thickets.I was wondering if it's o.k. to store your traps with fresh pine needles after waxing.I figure it shouldn't hurt, might help to conceal them better when bedding them.
What do you think? And does anybody else do anything similar?

i never understood, that if we go through the painstaking process of de-scenting our traps, to then intentionally put an odor on them. i just store mine in a wood box or a plastic tub.

but i know some very good trappers who do put tree or plant parts in htere containers.

I use red cedar to store my traps in, and have had no problems. I also took a note from Asa Lennon where he said he also liked to put some small broughs in in the wax. I tried that last year and really liked the way the traps came out. Tom

After dipping and/or dying & waxing I put all my traps in a Trap Shed, that is all that is stored in that particular shed. It use to be a small wood shed before that.

Absolutely!! IMO you want the trap to smell like the area you will be trapping. I store mine on fir boughs (main plant where I trap) in Rubbermaid tubs. Never had a coyote dig, so must be working.

Wax will pick up smells. I'd much rather it smell like the correct vegetation than some of the smells in my trap shed....LOL. I'm not as lucky as DLM and have a seperate building.
Heck, I get a huge castor and skunk hit when I walk in my trapping shed. Between the drying castors hanging up and the skunk essence I have stored, no way my traps would be "smell safe" for yotes.

Traps taking on the subtle odor of native to the area vegetation can be a decided asset in my opinion. I not only store my dyed and waxed traps in a tubs lined with cedar (cedar is everywhere in my country) but also as tmsrchessie pointed out I use subtle amounts of cedar oil in my trap wax and throw a few boughs in the dye solution. When I trapped the blueberry plains during the Summer months during the bounty era, I used sweet ferns as my fragrance the same way as sweet ferns were everywhere in the blueberry plains. Those simple steps always resulted in way less trap digging and occasional avoidances. Ace

Mine are in a plastic bin with cedar boughs. I store the bin in my garage/shop and there are lots of smells in there. cedars are the most common tree where I trap. I will take them out a couple of weeks before I start and let them air out.
