I always seem to get a dozen or so of these calls a year and thought it might be fun to post some pictures this time. The juveniles were half grown and there were 6 total skunks. The window well was 4 1/2 feet deep so i jumped in and removed them by hand =) easy money and no spray. Here's the before and after. ENJOY ! =)Image and video hosting by TinyPic Image and video hosting by TinyPicImage and video hosting by TinyPicImage and video hosting by TinyPic

Paul, most of us just have bad dreams about waking up and seeing the grim reaper. For these skunks it was reality ah haha

I've been told ( And have no reason to doubt ) that skunks have the worst immune system of all the small mammals. Everything that comes along, they catch. Our skunks population took a 90% hit around fifteen years ago and hasn't come close to bouncing back since. You can also nearly trap them out.

I do believe distemper is the biggest killer but don't rule out West Nile virus, rabies, and any of the tick borne diseases.

Skunks are the only known mammals that can have and carry Rabies and not die from it.

Coyotes are the biggest killer of skunks anywhere! We had a wave of them the past few years in the south west of wisconsin!

That's weird. I always heard that skunks have a super immune system. They can contract rabies and resist succumbing to it longer than any animal. My vet friend said once that nothing truly 'carries' rabies because it kills them in the end, and a carrier technically is unaffected by rabies.

Skunks fight it valiantly until the end and resist it for years.

Maybe their habit of denning together in groups for such a long time makes them spread diseases to each other more so than other animals?

Great Horned Owls, who have no sense of smell far out number skunk kills in my area...and I would quess many others.

That said, vehicles kill a lot of skunks overall.

Tsarevna, I don't know about Oregon but I've caught more sick looking skunks than any other species. They also seem to have more than their share of ticks.

Rabies, Distemper, Parvo, etc are all airborn virus' hat can spread thru their habit of clumping together in dens and then sleeping elsewhere the next day, leaving viable virus' in each den.

Parvo can also lie dormant in the soil for years so even after it kills off the animals it survives to kill again. I've seen this learned the hard way when I was fooling with coonhounds. Those that were serious about their hounds and pups would totally segregate their kennels, especially the whelping kennels.

Yeah parvo is bad. frown A lot of the coons have it in my area but I've never seen an ill-looking skunk. Maybe they are in store for a disease epidemic but judging by the way they are so plentiful one hasn't happened locally for a while.

Dumbest skunk I ever saw went into a nutria snare and drowned. Maybe some disease was affecting his thinking. grin
