I put some beaver meat in chunks in jars . added some sodium benzoate and some glycerine. as I wanted to keep it fresh (not tainted). Well I checked on the jars tonight, whoa the lids where popped up and juice was seeping out. It smelled a little rancid. so I opened them up and pour in some more s.b. solution and got as much air/gas out as possible then resealed the jars. Do you think it will still work for canines ?? or just attract every possum in the county ?

Personally, I think tainted bait hold better attraction for the canines so I wouldn't worry about that.
Also, when adding sodium benzoate to chunk bait, I have found that dissolving the preservative in warm water before pouring it over the bait allows it to soak in and permeate the chunks much better and more quickly. Then, one should leave the jug/bottle lids loose for a while in case the bait continues to work a bit for a few days until the preservative gets soaked in well. Ace

To preserve it as fresh, has anybody tried to add benzoate and then keep it in the fridge until it has had a chance to penetrate throughout the meat? It should work. I think i will try it.

Thanks Ace That is what I did with the sodium benzoate at a rate of 1/2 cup per gallon of warm water. I did leave the lids loose for a few days but it still put off more gas than expected.

if you freeze it , the sodium benzoate will not be able to penetrate the meat. If you really wanted fast penetration..get out one of them vacuum sealers. That will open up the meat and allow the mixture to be absorbed.

Works well for marinating steaks anyways.

If you freeze it until closer to time you could just unthaw as needed and use it fresh...~Dan~

beaver meat has a mild smell to it anyway so i don't think your hurting anything. i ground mine up and let it turn gray on the outside while still pinkish in the middle and it smells good. lol
i then added Dobbins bait solution to it.

now the cat meat i tried doing this away ended up too strong for my climate. i haven't caught anything off it.

I have a gallon of Bobcat meat(med taint) and Dobbins SOL solution. Just finished gassing. Smells good!!
Starting a beaver meat bait using the same. Gonna see which does the best here.

I have thought of mixing the beaver meat bait with the cat meat bait.

cool
