~8 months ago I asked the question how do people make charcoal. I got a lot of advice, one in particular that I'm interested in getting again.

I believe the fella lived in Missouri. He was using 55 gallon drums, filling them with wood and lighting them, then sealing them shut and letting them smolder. I have a few questions and would like to see the pictures again. If you're out there PM me or comment here.

For those folks that do or have made charcoal, feel free to chime in on how you do it!

The old post is gone Thirsty, but I had the pics in my bucket account.

Here is the oak that I start with.

This is getting the fire started

Adding more chunks of oak

Keep adding more wood without "snuffing" out the fire. It will really smoke up the area

In this picture the center barrel is almost ready to shut down. You need to make sure that all of the wood is burning good before you shut it down.

This is right after the lids were put on the barrel to extinguish the fire.

here is the finished product a day later. Be sure that it is completely out or it could re-ignite.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

How much of the wood is completely charred vs just partially?

Sometimes the top layer will be just charred. It depends on how soon you put the lid on.

try it a few times and you'll get the hang of it.

I just got to wondering. What kind of Hardwood trees are there in Hawaii. Might be able to make some cool fruitwood charcoal. This might be interesting Thirsty.

we have all kinds of stuff, mango, citrus, coffee, mac nuts, ect. I use strawberry and yellow guava wood most of the time. Kaiwa is also a really popular wood, it's similar to mesquite.

Thirsty, you run across any Koa...don't make charcoal out of it. Very nice stuff from what I have seen. Sky high here if you can find it.

Never argue with a fool - they will drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
