Hello Piperniner...
Hello White...ditto cazadador, bamm bamm(?)
Jeff...we have a no trapping policy for foothold traps for approx a 2 mile radius of the cabin. This also ensures that we will not catch any of our sled dogs that occassionally run loose iin the yard...dosen't appear that Modok has more than a one mile range of the cabin. He has everything he needs here..a fishrack, moose scraps, hides, and whne he comes in the cabin he pigs out on all kiinds of stuff ranging from jelly/honey to raw caribou meat etc. He came iin the cabin about 1 AM last night and is still visiting us now this morning.
I forgot about that story with the Chimp and Tweeto. When I was flying for Mark Air Express we had a photo of her in the cockpit with a head-set on like she was flying and the pilot of a twin otter....maybe that is why they fired me...of course destroying a Caravan prop at Mt. Village was also a factor...Hageland watched me taxi into the snow burm(in a ground bliaazrd). He said ya know Wayne someone is gonna be really P---Oed about that caravan prop...if you need a job in the future give ma a call...I did...HA!

Wayne - Great narrative. We need more. Nothing better than Bush stories and Bush flying stories at that. We need another book.

I may have told this before, but here is one only you and those from the area will appreciate. M.H. is in the otter as he turns base then final for Tunt. As he is landing, he looks out and see's a guy walking down the side of the runway. He has a shotgun in one hand and what appears to be a duck in the other. While unloading passenger's, the guy walks by and M.H. say's - I see you caught one. What kinda duck is that and the guy says - " a skinny one ".

First, there was the Wife Training Manual..

Now, there is the "HUSBAND TRAINING MANUAL" grin grin

I did not, I repeat, I did not come up with this stuff !!

" Guys, we love you, we really do. But as wonderful as you are, every so often you do something that makes us want to jump out the nearest window (or push you out first). Please, please, don’t ever…

1. Offer to “babysit” your own kids. When your 16-year-old neighbor does it, it’s called babysitting. When a parent does it, it’s called child care, and it lasts for at least 18 years. Get it?

2. Imply that office work is harder than housework. At the end of a hard day, there may be smoke coming out of your ears, but let’s face it: You’ve basically been sitting on your butt. That same smoke is coming out of our ears too—but we’ve cleaned the house, shuttled the kids around, run errands all over town and lugged grocery bags besides. When we say we’re exhausted, we are exhausted.

3. Give a home appliance as a gift. Forgive us if we can’t work it up for this one. A new washing machine? Really? Can we get you some new snow tires?

4. Buy us the “cougar” perfume. Under our crew-neck sweaters may beat the heart of an untamed vixen—but most of us don’t want to smell like one. (Nice try, though.)

5. Brag about your driving. This is supposed to let us know that ours isn’t so great. If my husband tells me one more time that he’s been “accident-free since 1978,” I’m going to reach over, grab the wheel and make the car swerve into something, just to shut him up.

6. Be unimpressed by a meal that took a lot of time and trouble. I don’t know whose fault this is (Food Network? Julie and Julia?), but every so often we get the idea that it would be fun to make stock and spend the day basting. If the result is less than earth-shattering, say something nice anyway.

7. Buy clothes without trying them on. We know that the second you get into a department store you start to feel faint, but do us a favor and take the extra five minutes. Otherwise, you know who gets stuck with the returns?

8. Know it all, especially in public. Oh, honey. While you’re going on at length about whatever it is, we’re taking the temperature of the room, and we know everyone’s starting to fidget.

9. Say anything remotely critical about our new haircut. Sometimes getting a new cut goes well; sometimes it doesn’t. Usually we know the difference. Don’t rub it in.

10. Expect a medal for doing a little housework. Umm…it’s your house too, right? For now, we’ll give you the bronze. Maybe someday, if you work hard enough, you can pick up a gold."

shocked shocked shocked

Hey piperniner: Back then when Hageland hired me on I had over 10,000 hrs...mostly all lower 48 and ag time, but thought I was good....UNTIL I flew with Hageland. I told hin at the start that I might not be able to keep up with him on the weather flying because I was watching himn do things I thought was impossible to do with an airplane...like landing in 40 kt crosswinds, "MARGINAL WEATHER" approaches to bush village, just getting down in the right spot through overcast, freezing rain, ETC. We were flying together(him in one plane and me in another) and he began teaching me how to do all that stuff. I tell freinds of mine, some of them pilots too about the flying that went on back then and I don't think they believe me because I thought it was impossible to do too, until I began flying for Hageland...he is probably the best pilot I have ever known...Heickel was pretty darn good too...guess he left the country now. Ill never forget those times.....about the time I left the coast the FEDS really cracked down on all that....I guess it is probably alot differant now??
Gonna be on an overnight cutting some new trail for a couple days...maybe get back with you then.
Wayne

Wayne, Your right a lot has changed the old idea that if you are in a 207 the plane ain't loaded till the tail hits the ground has pretty much gone away. Though some still fly in some marginal weather none seem to fly in the crap we all thought was common place 25 yrs ago. I will say the fatality rate and number of planes finding a new home on the tundra or in a mountain seems to have gone down so that isn't bad but it is frustrating to be put on one of the fair weather airlines when you really want to get someplace and they cancel the flight because they can't see blue sky. The biggest flying zoo I ever saw was during the hey day of the Togiak Herring seine openers. Little bush planes flying every where. At least they got them to cooperate and all go in the same circular direction.

We had an hour-long power outage this morning between 10 & 11. Two ravens engaged in aerial combat over a plastic bag flew into the power lines and wraped them around each other. KAZOT !! Smoked soul chicken. Couldn't have happened to a better victim. Oh, sorry Wayne.

Thought we raised him better than that, guess he was juist acting like a teenager with hormones going wild......he hung around with us until he found a girlfreind..then that was it...off he went!!!!

A biologist friend was just telling me that there is a record of a raven that traveled from Anchorage to McGrath. That's over the Alaska Range! Surprised me to hear that.
