Sometimes you need a break to get that task done. Take a break try again you'll get it.

oh yea. Thats the only thing I do for rats in the winter. I use carrots though. I put a carrot on the prongs and put the conni on a stick and sometimes use a wedge to help stabilize it. Then just put that down through your hole in the ice. I check them every three days here. Not sure what the time is for you. But this works great for me. Even used this method is the fall too.

Myself I have not done well with bait in open water, under the ice is a bit differant. I would try and find the runs. that is a better set IMO.

You have a point gil Turner, but in my situation finding runs is difficult. I have searched for them millions of times and have been unsucsessful. THis might be the same for JSTJ..... Try both ideas. But I think the baited 110 should be submerged. Try apples, carrots, and corn. The rats will hit better on one of these. You have to expierement

My experience has been much the same. Unless you get out there right after the ice is made and it made good clear ice then you can find the runs. The rest of the time, forget about it.

Getting back to the original post I've tried it under the ice. This was on a small river/creek, maybe 20-25' across and up to 8' deep. No bubble trails, all the rats are living in bank dens and there is about 6-8" of ice. We baited the conibears with carrots and then suspended them from a stick laying on the ice.

Results were disappointing but the method may have been substandard also! The rat population was getting hit hard by a disease, tough to say how much that affected the catch and how much of it was the method. I plan on trying it again sometime, just have to wait for the rat population to rebound.

I like parsnips for bait, 160's are better than 110's, by far.

In open water you will be disappointed with a lot of snapped, empty traps.

Tried it one winter with baited belisle 160's, potatoes and even a slice of beaver tail on the trigger.

Instead of rats, caught a beaaver by the nose with a slice of beaver tail for bait and another small beaver by the head with a potato slices for bait. Then baited some of my 280 belisles with potato slices and caugth a bunch of beaver that way, with a couple of misses. started tying the bait to a lower jaw and bending the triggers out of the way and had no more misses, good head catches on beaver. will try the same for 'rats.

I have had good luck with baited conis under the ice. Carrots work the best for me. I place my sets in small open areas in cattail patches.
