Subject: FWS publishes FY2007 ESA expenses
U.S. FISH & WILDLIFE SERVICE PUBLISHES FY2007 "FEDERAL AND STATE
ENDANGERED AND THREATENED SPECIES EXPENDITURES"
NOTE: Pursuant to requirements of the Endangered Species Act, the
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has belatedly published its report for
fiscal year 2007 on "Federal and state endangered and threatened
species expenditures." This and previous expenditure reports can be
downloaded at
http://www.fws.gov/endangered/pubs/index.htmlExcluding land acquisition costs and "Other ESA Expenses", the FWS
reports a total of $943,795,986 spent on protecting endangered and
threatened species. The most expensive species was the western
population of the Steller sea-lion, at $53 million. The next 12 slots
were filled by fish, with seven populations of salmon costing a
combined $186 million, give or take.
Even greater were land acquisition expenditures (combined FWS,
federal and state) and "other ESA land expenditures", totalling
$126,086,999. The most expensive was the pallid sturgeon, at
$11,276,000, followed by two populations of the desert tortoise, at a
combined $9,560,568. The most expensive class was fish, at
$50,797,902, followed by mammals at $17,866,891.
