Ever boil your traps in walnut hulls? If so, how?

Thank God for your blessings!

I used to, I'd put the whole walnut in the barrel and get them to simmer. Use as many as you can, simmer for at least an hr. maybe more. Skim them out with something and place your traps in and simmer them until they turn to darkness you want. It won't be black as dye, kind of dark brownish. The more hulls you can simmer the darker you can get your traps. Its like consentrating the tanin from the hulls.

Good luck

Will

Hi Slate
I found some fine mesh onion sacks and put the hulls in them it helps keep all the little floating pieces in one place. RayA

I did some of mine with the walnut hulls this year and was pleased how they turned out. I think the dye works a little better though.

I've been using walnut hulls for years. My traps come out as black as with dye. I put about twenty hulls in a cloth tube, tie off both ends, smash them with a hammer a little. Boil the hulls for a while in half a fifty gallon drum and you will see the water getting darker and darker. Put traps in for an hour at a good boil. Works great for me.
