white17:

Have you done much finish work with Mouldings ? A bit stuck on how to do a transition piece out of Red Oak that would divide the Kitchen and the Hallway. Hallway is Red Oak for the Hardwood floor and the Kitchen is Ceramic tile.

The dumb tile guy should have put the transition piece in when he did the floor, but left the job for me to do. He said " YOU FIGURE IT OUT !! " Not happy with him or this tile job !!

I got pictures of it to better explain it, if they would help.

Thanks !!

Just finished taking the pictures. I will have them uploaded in a few minutes. I measured out the drop from the top of the tile down to the Oak floor. Oak floor is exactly 1 5/16 inches lower that the top of the kitchen tile floor.

As soon as the picture get downloaded , I will post picts.

Well I hope it isn't as irregular as your contour tool seems to indicate but ........What I would consider is put a piece of oak at the bottom,,90 degrees to the run of the hardwood floor.

Next I would make a piece of oak that has a 90 dapped out of the backside that measures 1 5/16"... less the thickness of the first piece I mentioned.. on the tile part of that piece run a bevel off so that it tapers to the tile.

I'll try to sketch it. You should only need a table saw and 3 cuts to do the job.

It looks like you need to remove some material at the hardwood level in order to get an end piece in there. If you can do that then the backside of the 90 would equal your 1 5/16. The end piece wouldn't be mandatory but I think it would look better in the long run

Got a bunch of that thinset chiseled away from the edge.
(And I did not chip or break any of the tiles !! ) grin Here are the after pictures. Now, I know that it doesn't show up too well in the pictures, but the area that I chipped away at, is pretty much level now. One spot I might go back and take a 2nd look at , but I figured I would quit while I was ahead. ( And didn't break any of the tiles !! )

The other thing you could do is to take a couple pieces oak and glue them so you have enough thickness, and then saw a bevel down to the hardwood level. Run it through the table saw until you have the height you need. 1 5/16"

That would also cover that excess thinset and the old vinyl.

Is it the photo or does that wood floor have a sag in the center of the doorway or a hump on the right hand side?

Yes and no.

1. That sag is where they poured 6 bags of floor leveler . The "Tileman" frown did not set that one tile correctly and I did not see it till the job was done.

They also left the Kitchen Cabinets half completed. I had to box in t2 corners that were left open. And on the one corner they left open, they put a 2x4 to brace up the tile counter top by the stove. I got sick of waiting for them to come back to finish the job, so I turned a spindle on the lathe and replaced that 2x4 with the Oak Spindle.

We had that wind here too... was out of power for 12+ hours. Wouldn't bother me so much if we didn't have three freezers and a cooler in the store frown
