Start with a gas dryer(110 volt no rewiring)

1pc stainless steel screen(12 mesh) to cover back vent and front vent



sand back to allow figerglass to adhere to steel drum

place screen over entire back and fiberglass(its easier to turn the dryer on its back to do this)



fiberglass plastic front vent with screen

cut holes in bottom of dryer to allow any cob to fall through

cob is bedding type-but you also can buy regular fur cob-but larger size seems to work better for us

trying out tumbler-working well

2 muddy skunks going in

2 clean skunks coming out / really works good on wet or oiler fur-just do not overload your tumbler.
after you have this complete be sure to keep tumbler off the floor with cement blocks and always unplug the dryer every nite

Reason I say this is because that motor is not in a place where you can effectively clean it, see that it needs cleaning, etc. You need to make sure that motor is always clean, otherwise you risk fire.

Snowman-thats what the holes are for on the underside so it can be blowed out after use-if sealed the right correctly there is little cob fall-out.

One thing he fails to mention that is extremely important:

RUN ON NO HEAT

or

REMOVE THE HEATING ELEMENT

If you run it with heat you will cook your pelts.

... and an old electric dryer works just as well as a gas dryer. I have used both, but with no conversions needed. I always ran my tumbling medium inside bags. Never had any problems with those pesky house fires.

and how did it just clean those muddy skunks just by goin around in circles??

The cob is just a media that pounds everything. Sorta like using dry lava soap?

As the hides turn, they go partway up the diameter, then fall to the bottom...the media also sorta beats them, softens everything, cleans everything.

Same idea as a rock polisher.

I hope my post up above wasn't too....party pooperish? I just hate to see someone's house catch fire. I know of one person that lost a house and business due to (AFAIK) a similar setup. It's a great...not to mention CHEAP...way of doing things if you keep it clean. If something happens and the motor burns up, cut open the top and run a longer belt up through the top (assuming it's a drum belt). Then use an industrial farm duty motor. Wont need too many HP.

Good comments guys-Snowman, I would hope nobody would do this in there house-I also should have mentioned there is no gas going to the dryer and it is also vented outside of the building and i should of mentioned no heat. Plesae take the above comments serious.As with anything in your fur shed (freezer motors)they will build up with fur and dust that will need cleaned.

You can also use towels for your medium,seems to clean and dry pelts as good as cob or hardwood chips,but can be reused after a trip in the washing machine.

TexA-shoes do work fine-but as stated above under the last pic the dryer is on blocks,also you cannot cut the hole bottom out.The big houses do charge for tumbling furs but this is for cleaning and drying furs before they go on strechers. Also the cob i use is called bedding cob which is alot larger than regular fur tumbling cob.Thanks for the input.

Be carefull, even if you pay attention to where the debries end up bad things can happen. I just lost my shop to one, I had used it 8-10 hours earlier and unplugged it and vacumed out the cavity.

cbosshog79-if you unplugged it and vacumed out the cavity how did the fire start?

Im thinking maybe the above dryer was a old electric one. Gas dryer drums are a 1 pc. construction and only seal is in front were the drum spins and the motor is in back. Electric dryers are a 2pc. with a seal in back and front, you cannot seal the back seal and this would cause a big problem.Plus electric dryers are 220 volt which means re-wiring and removing elements-to many things can go wrong.

I weld in my garage...I have been told by NUMEROUS people to be VERY careful of the weld splatter. I weld in the center of my garage...what do I have to worry about?

Well, there I was, welding along...looked up from the corner of my mask and saw some strange lights off to my front left. Seems weld splatter had caught a box on fire, that box had flames shooting 6 feet in the air (big box full of packing paper).

I'm lucky I was in the garage, as I was able to grab it with a hoe and drag it to the driveway...if I had jumped in the house for five minutes to pee....well, the house would have burned down.

I still weld in the center of my garage, but I now have a welding "booth"...with sheet metal walls. The open side faces the open garage door.

Please do not run that tumbler in your house. You may not see how anything could ever happen...but they said the titanic was unsinkable too.
