I use 1 litre of Hydrogen Peroxide 1/4 - 1/2 cup of Baking soda and a tsp of liquid soap. I mix it up in a pail then wash the skunks in it. Once I have washed them I rinse them well in cold water to get the peroxide out. This works really well on dogs but make sure you wash them with off with lots of cold water or your black lab or your skunk will have a blonde streak.
Cheers
Pete

I normally sell my animals whole to my local furbuyer, but he doesn't have anyone who will skin them. They're all too chicken. LOL So I ended up skinning two this year and enjoyed it. They were the first furbearers I've fully skinned. My parents made sure I did it outside.

Is it possible to skin them without any smell? If I brought that smell, no matter how faint it was into the house the family would not be very impressed. I would skin them if I knew I could do it without having to stink for it.

Don't push on the underside of the tail near the body, either. If you are making your skinning cut there, use a SHARP knife so you need to use almost no pressure to cut the skin.

OR... grin & bear it. If I am skinning several in a row, I take a tweezers and put some paper towels in their rear end. That presses the anal gland openings closed, so I can work around the butt for a couple minutes, mostly when I am pulling the skin off at the thigh and lower back level, and pulling the tail bone away from the tail skin.

What is it with wives?! You'd think husbands would complain too.

Well yes I skin every skiunk I catch after cutting out the glands and then draining the glands. You then have quill and an empty glands to use in lure making.

Playin4funami: you sold the quill for about half of what it is worth.

Skinning a skunk is no big deal!! If they stink when you get them put them in the peroxide mix. Let them soak about a 1/2 hour, swish them around a few times. If they still reek...once more with a fresh mix. I put in about a cup of baking soda, a 32oz bottle of hydrogen peroxide and a squirt of dish soap.

Skin them like regular ...but NO PULLING !! Then when done I pull the essence with a syringe. Now you'll smell skunk...LOL.

WEAR RUBBER GLOVES...skunks are one of the largest carriers of rabies. Better safe than sorry...even if you think rubber gloves are overkill.

I got $14.50 for one of my skunks this year in the February sale at NAFA.
You only make the major error of cutting into the gland below the tail once. If you ever do make that mistake, you'll be finishing your skinning outside.

I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.
