Yes...about as big as they come 'round these parts.

Someone called it an Indigo.

I always thought they were different
Are they a sub-species?

I always let them go.

Snakes cannot hear. A snake call would be a con.
Adios,

Nope- they are not closely related. The indigo snake http://www.outdooralabama.com/watchable-wildlife/what/Reptiles/Snakes/eis.cfm Drymarchon corais couperi. While the black rat snake http://lib.oh.us/snake/fact%20pages/rat_snake_black/rat_snake_black.html is Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta. Although the taxonomists have started to recognize a reclassification to Pantherophis alleghaniensis . I suspect all of the rat snakes have been renamed by now. I can't keep up with the taxonomists. The indigo snake is protected in Alabama and most other states where it is found.

Indigo snakes are protected in Georgia.

They are not related to black rat snakes, and it is doubtful that they will be claimed as relatives.

I.E., the indigos have smooth scales, and the rat snakes have keeled scales.

We have been dealing with Rattlesnakes and gophers snakes since the spring. The biggest concern that I have is where people bring in alien species and they get away. I have had to deal with
pythons, boas, Cal. kingsnakes and cornsnakes to name a few. We have had an instance where a cobra escaped into a house and was not found. Fortunately it was the dead of winter and to date the snake has not reappeared. The house remained vacant for months.

What do you call a gopher snake?
I have never heard that name as far north as you are.
Down here that is one of the names given to Gray Rat Snakes.
Some folks call them white oak runners.
Thank You,

Were I live is the far northern end of the Senorian Desert. We have all the things that you would expect to see in desert conditions, cactus, 6 species of snakes including rattlesnake and great basin gopher snakes, scorpion and lizards. The Gophersnake resembles a bullsnake and a lot of folks here call them that but thir correct name is a great basin gopher snake.
These guys mimic a rattlesnake when approached. They will suck in air making themselves to look bigger, curl up, shake their tails and hiss at you, which sounds like a rattlesnakes rattle. They are quite agressive and will stike out at you or bite you if given the chance. Big guys will reach up to 4-5 ft in length.

That first snake picture isnt a black rat snake that is shown.Looks more like someones pet boa or python that was thrown in the yard for a photo shoot. The next photo you show with one held with tongs appears to be a black rat snake.

We are doing some snake work now, Been doing structure seals, rodent treatments and going to set some traps later today for captures before they go into their semi dormant behavior which is soon with these cooler temps.Indiam summer if it comes will keep many black rat snakes in these parts active into december in the warmer homes. Then they get lazy for the winter. Many till hunt in homes or get lucky when a mouse runs across them in their lay up spot and they get an easy snack with minimal effort.

Pete, once again Canada takes a back seat to no one when it comes to weird stories. The cobra loose in the vacated house is front page headline material.

You Might have to copy and paste the link. Here is part of what it says.
Quote:
---You will find Canada's only desert in the area extending from Osoyoos Lake to Skaha Lake and then westward up the Similkameen Valley towards Keremeos. The desert is approximately 15 miles long. The average rainfall is less than 12 inches per year and summer temperatures can rise to over 100 degrees. It's a little known fact that this desert extends right through the US and into the Sonoran Desert in Mexico. The plants and animals are found no where else in Canada.
I suppose that it depends on what "desert" means. Some other sites claimed that Canada has no deserts. A GOOGLE search for Okanagan Valley BC will bring up a lot of information about the area. However I did not find any other reference describing it as a part of the Sonoran Desert. I believe that the "Sonoran Desert" is a geographically described area of the Southwesern U.S. and parts of Mexico- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonoran_Desert . Also see- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_North_American_deserts . But, let's get back on the subject of snakes. smile

First pic is a Colombian Boa often called a "Red Tail Boa" though they are not true red tails. Second pic is not clear enough to tell but most likely a black rat snake.

OK, now that we got that right! smile

I always tghought it was a black rat snake. Someeone told me that they don't grow over 6 ft., which this one was, and that it had to be an Indigo, which I've never seen one.
This one was well over 6 ft. and payed $135. to remove it plus do the seal up!

Black rat snakes that have had a good life so to speak can exceed 72 plus inches as I have caught them and captured a few over the years that were documented as to length with a tape. 78" is the largest I have personally measured and released.
A beautiful specimen it was.

I have ever seen an Indigo snake in my part of the world as of yet.I believe they are more prevelant to the south east coastal region.Their scale pattern is quite different then a black rat snake.

I'm glad they are cracking down on that stupid mess. SOme things should be outlawed altogether unless there is lots of training and licensing involved. There should be no private individual ownership of this type of animal, tigers, boas, lions, wolves, etc.

I suspect that it is a juvinile Blue Racer Coluber constrictor http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/information/Coluber_constrictor.html You may have to conduct a scale examination to be sure

Lt. Grey, remeber all the old westerns when they would talk about high desert and high desert plains (which is where the scrub and trees would grow). An example is Santa Fe NM at 7,000 feet about sea level it is "high desert" and norther Santa Fe is " high desert plains".

I don't know what the elevation in BC is but if these plants and critters can live in Santa Fe, I would imagine they would live anywhere with similar conditions.

I bought a hat band from a guy and it was a green rattler that the guy called a "plains rattler". Is this what is found around the Dakotas and BC?

I don't see much in a state where I never half to worry about looking before stepping over a log goin to a beaver [Please excuse my language... I'm an idiot] in shorts and sneaker to trout fish. But I watch for them when I'm out west or in MO.

I've been to the desert at high noon...
There aren't any rattlesnakes out at that time.
They're all in some rock crevis' some where in the shade, which if I'd had any sense, would have done likewise! smile

Hey LT
Yep you are right the Senorian desert is a small geographic area but the dry desert climate conditions continue right up the spine of the continent to where we are here. Drier and hotter than than the back door of [Please excuse my language... I'm an idiot] in the summuer and has been known to get down to -20-30 in the winter.
