When making the window cut on coons do you make it up to the top of the hole for his tallywhacker or what. I know they should be narrow but how high should they go? FurHarvesters pelt handling manuel says make the cut up to just below the penis hole. Im confused confused

I go right above it. However, some of the old timers would raise heck if you didn't leave "the identity" on.

there is no need for a window cut on coon if you skin it to make the window, Make your opening cut from the heel area to the pecker on both legs, then from the anus to the pecker, pull the belly flaps down and skin as usual, when boarded out the coon will have the window already in the pelt and the back will become longer.

Been making the cut above the penis for around 25 years, I haven't had any complaints yet. I also use the "money cut", but my cut doesn't go quite that high. The folks from NAFA aren't all that impressed with an extra 2" of belly fur halfway down the tail on a finished pelt.

I am not an expert, but several coons lots I helped with have made top lot. My hubbie taught me to cut it just above the "tallywhacker" hole and run it down, but not too wide. I think it fleshes better when I have the complete coon. I also angle my cut from the heel to the anus hole running the fur line on the inside of the leg. Its just my preferance.

Some guy's call that the "Money cut", but all it does is leave a lot of belly fur on the back when stretched, and is quite obvious to the buyer.

A lot of people cut the coons to the penis when skinning. Do not cut that high when you skin a coon. I have seen some fellas that actually cut the coons above the penis hole. When they do the cut that high, they have a hard time not tearing the coon when they skin it.
As was said above, skin straight acrossed the legs and either slightly above the testicals or a small bit below. If you skin in this manner, you will not have to much belly fur on the pelt.
When I buy coons that are cut to high, they almost always have long tabs hanging down on the backside of the hide.
I hate seeing coons that have been skinned in such a manner. It makes the coons hard to scrape because, of being cut to far to the back of the coon. These coon tear very easy when scraping around the tabs.
You can trim the penis hole out after the coon is boarded.

As a general rule i wont argue, but im gonna make an exception, i have watched greg from nafa use this cut several times, i and two others have sent more coon than i care to number to nafa the last several years done just as i described and all three of us recieved top money for them , several top lot awards and many coon in the 65 to over a hundred bucks on 4 and 5 xls, every fur buyer we have taked to said the chinese would not buy them that way but we paid little attention as we shipped more coon that we caught than they bought. Most buyers are to put it simply, paranoid of put up or green skinned fur, those that are not object to this cut because they are buying green, you cannot afford to pay a flesher enough money to do a very good fleshing job on this type of cut coon as great care has to be taken when fleshing the flanks to avoid tearing them, in fact the cooon has to be turned on the beam and the flanks done seperate to do a good job. As far as the nonsense about buyers seing the belly fur on the back the little flaps of belly fur is removed, its the leg fur you are after what little belly fur is on the back of the pelt is removed in dresssing, no one is going to fool anyone with a money cut as described, that is not the point, the point is to get more useable fur on the back side of the pelt and make that longest part into one strip, not to fool anyone, i would be more than willing to put my fur and the other two fellows fur up against anyones caught from the same area, as to quality, length. prices paid, or grades, or total dollors for same numbers. As far as ripping out coon skinned from this cut THAT is from the number of folks useing power skinning machines and not stopping to pull down by hand in two spots that cause this ripping, a bit of care and it is avoided. I have many pictures of a fairly large number of coons dried and ready for sacking and i would be more than glad to have anyone look over those pictures and find ripped pelts. As many as would like can jump on me for this but i have done enough coon this way to know darn good and well it is a good cut that provided very good results.

So just what are you trying to say here? I know Greg real well and have never seen him skin a coon to the penis hole. He puts one leg of the coon in a vise grip and holds the other leg in his hand. He skins his coon straight acrossed the testicls. You might want to call Greg and ask him what he thinks about coons being skinned to the penis hole.
As far as a coon tearing, it makes no difference how it tears. I have seeb hundreds of coons torn by hunters and trappers because they cut the coon to high.
Why woul;d you cut a coon all the way to the penis? All you have is belly fur that must be trimmed off the pelt. I can promise you the way I skin coons, they will have a nice window when they get boarded.
As far as all the amt. of coon you and your buddies put up each year, that is great you catch that many. I would say it is a safe bet that I have handled way more coon than you will ever skin in your life.
So now you got your argument. I still will tell every person that sells me green coon, to not skin them to the penis hole, it is wrong.

Greg twists the ankles when he makes the cut He showed me 1 on 1 personally at the NTA it's hard to describe in text but he goes from the bottom of the leg straight across this would be between the penis and the vent now he goes straight up through the vent to the tail bone

randy is right he does twist the ankles slightly and then splits it between the vent and penis hole. about 2 inches above the penis opening. When he boards the coon he doesnt even use the knife too trim anything in the belly region.
