Was told by buyer the day before our dryland coon opener to expect early carcass coon to top at $8-$10...mostly size dependent.

The big boys look pretty nice...but they all have a little ways to go in general IMO. But got a few that don't look half bad smile

The big boars have some finish but are still off a little bit. The sows and young need some time yet to fur out. They pretty much look like they always look at this time in my part of Wisconsin.

57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

checking roadkills regularly here some of the sows are still thin and see through once fleshed but the boars are real close. no i'm not saving them yet can't till nov 17 but just getting into the fleshing thing i been selling in the grease for all these years but with there being no money in "in the grease" hides these days... had to get a warm up on the beam then they get exchanged for yote bait

I have a question guys, in my state i cannot use a conibear with a jaw spread greater than 6" without a beaver/otter permit. It must also be set below the water line or the high water line in tidal water. Here is the question while trapping muskrats along a vast tidal area i have seen more coon tracks in the mud at low tide than i ever have anywhere else. They are running the bottom edges and climbing up the steep banks. If i put some 160's on the banks below the waterline to be legal should i catch coon in them? Not sure about the size. thanks for any help guys

I'm no big shot trapper but any info is good info when used properly right? grin
I didn't take the time to look through all 16 pages of this thread lol but wanted to add my two cents...
First off, I can't use any game fish (or any part there of) as bait here, so always make sure to check your regs!
Second, rather than commercial baits/lures I buy sardines, tuna, oysters, and clams IN OIL. I also recently came across Clam Juice in my local grocery store. I drain the oils into a spray bottle then put the meat into an empty baby food jar. Gives me several different "flavors" to put into my different sets and between a couple of cans and the Clam Juice my spray bottle is full and all set for sprayin some trails.

BTW LT, Thanks for starting such an informative thread! This is part of why I love this site! grin

I make a clam lure as does Katz bros.

They work really well on the ringtails.

Does laying down a trailing scent help to get coons to your sets?

Yes, absolutely it does !
I use trout oil that I make during summer months.
It will really 'suck in' a 'coon regardless of what type of trap or snare you're using!

i am by no means a large numbers guy but a fair share pretty quick this year, what i learned was that if youre anywhere near a major food source, mainly corn fields put out alot of sets and most of the time a farmer will let you trap coon right on the field. Also i found corn in my dps led to less clean out, dont know why but it worked amazing for me! Everyone says fish is good bait, and it is but a smoke smell with it is even better. Also a simple lure that i thought performed as well as anyone i bought was molasses, honey, bergamot, and persimmon, it had a strong piercing odor. I also used a butter pecan food flavoring for a trailing set and i honestly believe i had a coon at every set i used this at. I found, corn, smoke and sweet piercing odors really helped me out this year. ALSO DONT OVER LOOK BLIND SETS!
