Timber and soy beans on one side of the road, corn on the other. Any standing corn late in the year. Little creeks, big creeks, little rivers, big rivers, den trees and barns (old houses) trap them in that order and you will always be on the coon.

I usually hook tree limbs up as drags, but sometimes will stake with rebar.

Yeah, that long of a stake will hold them.

Never thought of attaching them like that, I will have to do that at some of my water sets.

Thanks for the idea ajherms. Will have to give that a try.

Coon Trapping the Untold Story by Mike Red O'hern, completely changed the way I trap, awesome book. It definitely opened my eyes about how a coon line is set up and maintained.

In the water a wooden stake would be ok, I wouldn't use it on land though...

Watch out if you use rebar stakes with Grizz. Coon go round and round and wear a hole around the stake. Be sure to check after each catch. I have had stakes so loose you could lift it from the hole and have had a few pulled(never on first catch though). I used 18-24 inch X 1/2 rebar but switched all to pogos after one lost trap and coon.

Yep, an old picture for sure!
This was the year I experimented with using 10 ft. trail snares.
Here's the reason you don't want to use them on a 'coon or a bobcat... blush

Any of you guys that use 160's in trails, how many traps do you set for each coon taken? I have found that I am not nearly as efficeint with them as apposed to footholds or DP's. I have heard a lot of talk about how great they are but I'm not seeing it. I tried it this year on some properties so I could check them after work. So far I've wasted my time. It takes me about a dozen 160's to produce what one foothold will. Is this normal?

Thanks

Dan
