im going to be making a skinning machine and was wandering which type you all prefer the roller type or the kind with the clamps made out of vise grips.

this is going to be used mostly on coyotes.

None of the above.

Make a slip noose out of 1/8" cable put a fixed loop on one end so you can hook to the skinner mast.
Open your coyote place as much of the flank fur Into the noose draw it down attache fixed end to mast and start to pull. If you run out of head room reverse the winch open the noose pull the hide down through the noose re tighten and start pulling again.

This system Is a positive pull with no slipping or tearing. And very simple and cheap.
I pull all my coon and coyotes this way.

I have clamps and they slip alot or tear hide sometimes. Tried cable this year and that solved those issues but it leaves a mark. Wish I had roller style...

With that said they all beat pulling!

Are you talking about the leg end or the hide end? Leg end use I use braided nylon, hide end duckbill vice grips with two rods one side and one rod on the other to meet between the opposing rods.

it seems like most people on here have the clamp style. i was wandering about slipping and tearing with those as apposed to the roller style.

it seems like you would want most the pressure to be on the back where the hide is the toughest like with the roller style and the loop style

maybe a roller style with the clamps on the side also, then you would have three points of pressure

if you look in the last pick (Nick C) posted you will see the coon is held in place by (rolling) the hide between two bars and then locking the bars in place.
