I know some lures perform very well in both the fall and spring for beaver but... are there any that shine particularly well for spring beaver vs. in the fall or vise-versa (ones that perform best in fall)?

In the fall beaver have pretty much one thing on their mind.. Food.. I have found that a good, strictly food lure is more productive in the fall than a castor base or castor/food lure. I have also found that mixing food attractors and castor in the same formula isnt as productive as keeping the two types of responses seperate. castor causes a teritorial response and beaver dont normally encounter food odors when they freshen a mound and vice-versa. Some beaver, espeacially spooky beaver may shy from a lure that incorporates both food and castor in one. Just isn't natural.

I would imagine a good heavy castor based lure would be hard to beat up in the spring. My season goes out the last of Feb but then again I catch beaver all season long on heavy castor based lure so what do I know,LOL

I have never noticed a difference in performance of my lures,in fall versus spring beavers.
They are castor based and as territorial as beavers are,always seem to do the job.
Confidence in the lures you use,and the sets you make also plays a part in how well you do.Good beaver numbers also helps.

Castor based in spring, about anyting in fall, nothing works consistently in heat of summer. Food lures are hit and miss, curiousity lures / castor based same, have to earn my money in summer, lol.

I agree Tom and J. Castor will smack'em anytime. I have just done a little better with food in the fall espeacially after I have taken the adults with a castor base. Like ky said, what do I know?

I know if i had to depend on beaver lure id find another job, that much i do know, lol.

I make no claims about being a beaver expert or even a good beaver trapper. I catch the ones I need to catch and work really hard to catch the ones that will not cooperate. I use every trick I know sometimes and then make a mistake or do something completely WRONG... and catch the last one I have been trying to catch.

I do however believe that there is more wisdom in these words then most beginning trappers ever understand.



The lure is really a very small part of it, and in a lot of cases can be the biggest part of the problem.

I set up another ADC mink job and did not even put out any lure at all.

i have several beaver lures and use them sparingly. i like the choke points and runs in the beaver ponds. i have to agree with JTrapper. in the late spring and summer you just got to bust your butt getting in and out of the bad spots.

i look more for location than anything.

i dont know if anyone will agree but put some fresh mud on top of a castor mound and whatever beaver lives there is not gonna pass it up. he has got to see who dunnit. Well, try to see who dunnit.
