Decoy made a comment on the View from my home thread and I replied to him. In pondering & reflection I figured I would start this thread so we can get to understand each other's reasons for being here. Folks like Paul understood the value of this site and dreamed it up, as top notch trappers and formatted this venue. A tip of the hat to them.

Decoy reflected:
Quote:
Thanks for the great pictures you have graced the pages of T-Man with. Looks like a very pretty area. Glad to see you on T-Man M.T.

Paul

My reply to Decoy and a reason to start this thread.

Quote:
Although my registration doesn't show it, I have been posting on Paul's site since about 1999-2000. When I first tried to post I was so computer illiterate it took me about four hours to get to the point where I had it together enough to post. I spent most of my time posting about sets that I used and mentoring young folk trying to understand the world of trapping. If they had a question that I could offer my personal preferential sets for I would offer them while understanding others have other choices they would make which could even be more suitable then mine. I appreciated the chance to explain these things to a new generation of trappers because nobody was there for me when I started out. I understood my targeted animals and knew where to capture them but tricks such as dirt hole sets would never have been offered me by any old time trapper in my neck of the woods. The youngsters here are hob knobbing with some of the best trappers that have ever lived and that is a very accurate description. Fortunately those kids are bright enough to know that and by nature are so respectful of that knowledge that it gives me solace to see three sometimes four generations of trappers seeking out each other. Paul has done a good thing here. .

Eventually though , I had to switch my game plan and hopefully educate this forum and the trapping fraternity on how to protect their lifestyle. Some folks get upset with my posts because they expose just how important it is to understand that we are not isolated and operating in a safe structure anymore. We have political adversaries that are trying to destroy us and they are in political as well as in Judicial offices. We MUST learn to communicate our position better & recognize who our enemies are in that structure. If we do not,our lifestyle is doomed.

Two tips for new trappers that I learned which speed up trap setting.

(1) When adjusting pan pressure ,put your fingers under the loose jaw and push the pan to desired location in trigger slot and that controls the pan tension better without risking a trap snapping on your fingers as your fingers are not between trap jaws but under the loose jaw. Eventually your eyes and your fingers will be able to locate trap lb pressure and make for wobble free trap placement.

(2) Have connie-bear cross stakes handy and ready when you put your trap on brook bottom. I always use a dive pole if trap immersed under water and stand down stream of that pole. I then put my fingers between the top jaws of the trap and drop it into place. Do that without curling fingers tightly around those jaws so that if the jaws snap shut your trap jaws will be moving away from your hands as they snap shut. As soon as the trap is on the bottom ,place a stick between spring and force deep enough into the bottom to keep the spring steady and then tip the stick at a sixty degree angle so that it fits between top jaw and lays against dive pole. Then do same on other side. Make sure those stabilizer sticks as placed so that if an otter or beaver is caught the sticks will pull out of the bottom and allow the captured animal to be pulled down stream and free of the set location so that other critters can pass through without being impeded by the first . I always put tangle sticks down stream so animal will float free but not be pushed or pulled to shore as the wire is just long enough to allow them to pop free of the dive pole location, pass the tangle sticks but not long enough to allow access to shore. If a hungry coyote/farm dog or bobcat wants to pull the floating beaver to shore they might enter the water but they will not stay in long enough or be able to pull out past tangle sticks. This is especially important with otter who might be tail or waist trapped,(it does happen no matter how good you are with trigger honing skills) and will hasten their demise. I used to spend a lot of time offering and accepting such tips but I now have other things to offer which might seem obscure and unimportant but in my opinion are even more important in the education of new trappers hunters and gun enthusiasts.

Maybe others would like to reflect on what they get out of Trapperman.com. Could be interesting stuff.

Mira .... I too enjoy and read most all of your posts and I agree with you that the future of our joy of trapping lies in the youth and not old timers like me, but it is our responsibility to see to it that youth are guided to the best of our abilities and have the opportunity of our experience.

Keep up the good work ...... Garry-

I like reading your posts, Mira. But --

It isn't about justification as much as noting where I have changed in how I post here. I was hoping others would enter into similar reflections as to why they post and if they understand how we must recognize what the future is bringing down the pipes. Where can we help to get the messages out in the courts & the political arena that we have just cause in practicing our lifestyle and how important is our lifestyle to Wildlife management which we PAY LICENSE for to our animal populations?

In order to make my last sentence clear to everyone I feel this is a factor that most trappers don't really have knowledge of how screwed up Wildlife Management has become in other countries where licenses are not sold nor is fur put up for sale because the ARA won their battle against fur trapping but ignore the same amount of animals die and are made into garbage. In fact bad Government made rules because a few people in powerful positions took over.

Quote:
THE ISSUE IS ANIMAL WELFARE, NOT THE JAW-TYPE LEGHOLD TRAP
The constant focus on jaw-type leghold traps is misleading and misplaced. The image of these traps as a generic variety is used as a highly effective and emotionally charged symbol. This symbol equates the absence of these traps with better animal welfare. This is not a correct assumption. In many cases it can be demonstrated that devices other than jaw-type leghold traps lessen the welfare of the trapped animal.

The real issue is how to determine the welfare of animals caught in traps and then how to build traps of all kinds which improve that welfare.

Often lost in this issue are facts about trapping which govern the parameters of the issue. In terms of numbers, about 1 million animals are trapped in Canada for their pelts annually. In the EU a rough approximation is that 5 million animals are trapped annually. This includes at least 1 million muskrat, of which at least 300,000 to 400,000 are caught annually under the Netherlands muskrat eradication program funded by the state. Those who campaign against the trapping regimes in third countries have not publicized the EU figures or the methods used.

By far the most common method (between 90 and 95%) for trapping animals in Canada and in the EU is to use a trapping system that kills the animal. This includes devices on land which kill the animal (such as body traps and snares), as well as devices used underwater (body traps, snares, cages, jaw-type leghold traps). Each species is often caught by one of several traps, and there is no one trap that catches them all. It is surprising that the most common method used in the Netherlands to trap muskrat is an underwater cage which the muskrat swims into but does not swim out. Unlike many other types of trap, this trap can catch several animals at once without resetting.

That bold portion doesn't tell the whole story. They are not allowed to sell the fur from those animals as sale of fur is banned there. Thus the animals are trapped and garbaged.

I have had the utmost respect for you thru my time here until the other nite......you lost alot of credibility w/ me then.

Others may feel the same about YOU Keith. You yourself have done a lot of bashing on members here as well as that members family. There's an old saying that states "Think before you speak", well on the internet world it is also "Think before YOU type". Yes I thought this reply over.

We walk on water up here although it isn't about Saintliness! We have to, because water is frozen right now. However the underground springs make for some good trapping localities when they seep out of the bank and a bit of bait with a 1 &1/2 coil is just the right toy to make a little jig on ice worth while.
