I am wanting to make some bait for fox and yotes. I heard that Jack Makeral works well for this. Does anyone have any ideas on how to prepare jack makeral for fox bait?

I don't know about fox or yote, but I do know that mixed with Fish Oil (I use Menhadden) and a little glycerin it works great in a pocket set for coon and mink.

A "half truth" is still a whole lie.

well mark, thanks for the info. i may have to try that too. I am working on a little experament for coon bait using bacon grease and smoked clams in oil, and some kind of preservative.

Grind Mackerel, add glycerine and castor. Some rat glands wouldn't hurt nothing either.

cool

I made mine like bottomline said. Mushed up jack mack with a touch of castor and enough glycerine to make it a paste. Have not got to use it much but it has worked great the little i did. The grey fox sure will dig till they get to it. Even took a coyote with it.

Think i read about it in the archives from Tracy Truman...

I've used mackeral and peanut butter mixed in my PVC sets (on land) for coon... tends work great on fox too apparently.

Mackeral will work alone or with about anything you want to add. I have used a fair amount of it mixed with honey and asafoetida and had good luck. You can add shellfish, shrimp, caster, rat gland or about anything you want.

IMO, Jack Mackeral is the best coon bait there is. I like to add a touch of beaver castor to just about all my lures. It just seems to enhance the smell and seems to attract almost any critter.

If the weather is warm do you need to refrigerate this mackeral mix between uses or do you add something to it to keep it from going bad?

Asafoetida (1/4 ounce) to two cans of mack. as said above

Yes it says Jack Mackeral and it is by the canned salmon & tuna fish , never seen a store that didnt have it. Lots of people use it as an alterantive to salmon patties, because of cost.

You dont refrigerate and we use it up when we make and we sometimes run out of asafoetida so it dont always get it.

How much glycerin per bait mix? What about sodium benzoate in the mix? How long will bait last stored?

I have found that 4oz of glycerine to 1 can of jack is right for me. Makes a nice paste type bait if you mix and mush up the jack.

Have NEVER been able to find it in ANY store here. Believe me... I've looked.

I can buy the same size can as shown above of the Wal Mart brand of salmon for under $2.00 per can. The salmon however has a MUCH more mild smell than say, a can of sardines in oil. Now those (sardines) I buy for $1 per can. They're Chicken of the Sea brand.

It works well on grey fox here but using fish bait or sardines we have to get all of the oppossums and coons before we start gettin the fox lol. Thats the main reason I stick to gland lures and other baits. sardines are killer on the greys.

Big catches of fox are not made with jack mackeral.....but good catches of 'possums are. Most fox trappers rely on a good fox lure and most don't use bait at all....

Maybe Tracy Truman will see this... I think it was in his video he said that he catches around 80% of his fox on a homemade jack mack bait and he seems to do quite well on the greys...

I have Tracy Truman's DVD (excellent DVD) and he used jack mackerel bait and done very well with it on the greys he also used a smoked salmon bait mix and put the greys in the fur shed.

Hopefully Mr. Truman will add his 2 cents to this post.

hey livetrap and NorthernNM look for dollar general or family dollars. The food lions have jacmac on the bottom shelfs here on the east coast. food lion = grocery store sometimes pet stores carry jacmac. I have used a lot all by itself works really good on my greys and coon love it as well. HTH

So I went to every single grocery store last night and not one darn can of that jac mac. the workers look at me retarded when i would ask them if they carried it. where i live in NM is probably about the same as Cali. Lynx might have been on to something with the whole yuppi thing. i'm just gonna order some off walmart's website i guess. it will be like waiting for lure to come in.

your bacon grease experiment was tried here in ky. added a little asfoedita oil, and had foxes blowing the hole out in frozen ground!also good for coons, but the foxes and coyoes really tore it up!

After I got home I realized half the cans I bought looked a little different.
