I am trying to flesh a beaver and I cant get all the fat and meat off around the head. This is my first one but how can I get all of this off. Thanks is advance.

try and get ahold of the loose fat and pull up on it as you cut. Keep doing this and it should work.

You do not need to flesh from the ears to the nose. Clean it up a bit, but do not worry about it too much.

I don't imagine it gets cold enough for you to do this but,stretch them a let them freeezzze. Use a push type flesher and go to town!

Two ways o get this. 1st get your skinning knife really sharp. Lay the pelt over your knee and shave of any thick fat.

2nd you could by a single bladed safety razor. Break, file or cut off the plastic safety guards and then use it to shave off the heavy fat areas. Be carefull with the razor corners as you can easily slice though the hide. I use to use this method but now use the first option. I have my knives sharp enough to shave with.

The next time you skin one of them critters, skin it CASED, not open.. They stay on the Fleshing Beam a lot easier when they are done that way.

I wouldn't do 'em any other way!

BELLY-UP TIGHT to the board/beaver and go for it. There is no other choice.....

I thought beaver were supposed to be skinned open. thats how i've been doing mine. can they be cased too?

After it's fleshed you cut it open and sretch it the conventional way. Never tried it, seems like case skinning would be way harder than fleshing it.

Cut it half way up then case the rest of the way. This gives ya a better hold on the beam whem fleshing the top half.Cut open when finished. RD

I do the head and inside the front shoulder area with my MB. Quick and easy. I thin the top lips and the nose, and cut the bottom lips off. It doesn't need to be perfectly clean...I just like to clean it up to avoid rot and help it dry faster.
