Telemarketing fundraisers average 57% cut (San Diego Union-Tribune)‏

Sent: January 12, 2009 3:51:55 PM

NOTE: The HSUS, and several of its affiliates, have used the
telemarketing firm, The Share Group Inc. for many years. From 2000
through 2006, HSUS received $974,459 on almost $12 million raised by
the Share Group, a return of less than 9%. Despite continued
performance well below industry averages, HSUS repeatedly hires Share
Group Inc. year after year. In 2007, the telemarketing industry
average was a return to charity of 43.6%. In 2007, HSUS and its
affiliates had a combined return of negative 3.1%. The complete CA
Atty. General's report mentioned below can be found at:

San Diego Union Tribune
Editorial: Middleman's cut
Best to send check directly to the charity

Speaking ill of any charity probably is not wise. Yet the California
attorney general's annual "Summary of Results of Charitable
Solicitations by Commercial Fundraisers" for 2007 speaks none too well
of many fundraisers or the charities that hire them.

Derived from state-required filings completed by 730 commercial
fundraisers, individuals or companies, the report seeks to persuade
donors to ask – before they respond to a solicitation – how their
contributions will be apportioned.

In 2007, commercial fundraising campaigns in California took in
$370.33 million, of which the fundraisers got $208.7 million and the
charities that hired them only $161.6 million, or 43.6 percent.

That average rises with the relative few payments from fundraisers to
charities such as the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation in Dumfries,
Va., which received 73 percent of the $95,395 collected. The average
falls with the same fundraiser's campaign for the Marine Corps
Heritage Foundation in Boston, which ended up $213.78 short of the
fundraiser's fee.

The report also lists the breakdown of 2007 revenue to thrift stores
involving charities and vehicle donations.

For-profit thrift stores that buy the used merchandise donated to
charities reported receiving about $29.6 million, with $5.5 million,
or only 18.62 percent, paid to the charities. For-profit thrift stores
managed by outsiders who are paid a fee or commission reported $4.4
million in revenue and about $166,929, or only 3.75 percent paid to
the charities. Vehicle donations raised about $27.2 million, of which
charities received about $11.78 million, or 43.36 percent.

Any money raised by commercial solicitations is more than a charity
otherwise would have. Still, donors should know that the urge to
donate likely benefits charities more if the checks are sent directly
to them.
