im new to trapping ive been looking into the pipeset just wondering how efficient they are. And i'm trapping on a farm that has alot of hardwoods and a dry creek bed just wondering what would be the best set for this type of enviroment

All I use for the most part. Shove some pipes into the ground in that creek bed or at the base of a coon tree.

Good luck. Tell us how it turns out.

What I did last year was shoved marshmellows down the 1 1/2 pipe to clog it. Then I used a variety of different lures. fish oil by water, honey baits work really well with marshmellows too because they are sweet smelling.

for my water sets this year, I have been saving pill containers. I am going to put a screw into the pipe and have some lure already in them with a couple cottonballs in it so i can just switch em out with a new one.

Hans,

Would empty film cannisters work for your application? Just a thought, I've used em before.

I would imagine they would. I just liked the pill comtainers because they are liquid tight and no leaks.

I use 3/4 in, shoved at about a 30-45 deg angle, leave the tip about 6 or 8 inches from the ground. Shove some leaves, grass, or cotton balls down about 3 or 4 inches into the pipe, bait it and you're set. For bait I use a number of things. Tuna and/or sardines give a nice aroma. Put a lil fish oil in a spray bottle, set to stream and you can put nice lil scent trails right to your set from any surrounding trails.

Worked for me. I tried it for the first time this year. Put out in two spots, one on sign the other in a good spot. Both produced eventually when we got a couple warmer nights. Wad of grass down the pipe and some grape seeds and skins left over from making juice. The grape scrap was great bait for me this year.

Curious will they work on mink using a fish bait?

The tree is the only thing keeping him from working it from the back.Alot of times they work pipes from the back to stay out of the water.I have seen where they acualy stand on the pipe and reach arond to get inside(mud tracks on ground and on pipe)

I am gona try some bamboo pipes next year(less visible to theives).I've done some side by side testing and have'nt seen a preference of one over the other by the coon.As long as they smell good, coon will work them.

I have never seen this. All of mine I just put at a 40-45 degree angle wherever. Especially along trails. I put it back about 2-3 feet from the trail in plain site. Usually they just come from the trail where my trap is i guess. I also use about a 2 foot chunk of pipe and have a lot more sticking out of the ground so when they tangle up in it they knock it over. Then its kind of like a flag so I don't have to go right up to the trap everytime. Seems to help with scent. Every other day I change the lure/bait in it.

Hey Hans, are you staking solid or using a slide?I use slides almost exclusivly so I need to be as close to the water as posible.
This isnt a good picture of the site. The bank goes almost staight up and the coon walk the shallow ledge in the water so the coon are coming in from the water anyhow.
On a flat featureless bank ill put brush or stick cane in the ground behind it to force the coon around to the front.Pick up a few fox that way too.It keeps them from walking behind the pipe and getting a quick sniff and moving on.Dont need much brush .Just enough to make it seem easier to the coon or grey to veer to the front of the pipe as they travel the through.

I stake mine so we are coming from two different side. I just have never had a problem with the critters coming in from the back when I put enough angle on the pipes when they are driven into the ground.
