I want to share my DSL with another computer in my house. I know I need a wireless router but do I need anything else and is it easy to install? Do I need any hardware for the second computer? Any help would be appreciated.

2nd computer needs a wireless network card. It's an easy thing you can install yourself with a screwdriver by looking at the instructions it'll come with. It's basically a little PCI slot card that will have an antenna stick out the back where all your cords plug into.

I'm a blond, I've done it, you can too. smile

The old version of wireless data transmission was called Wireless B. Wireless G came out a few years ago, leaps and bounds faster and stronger in signal than B. Now, wireless N has come out. I haven't tried it yet so I don't know how good it is. I believe it's all backwards compatible.

I personally like Linksys as a brand, but they irritate me because they outsourced their customer service to India. But the are relatively easy to configure, and this is very nice.

Most routers are made for cable, so finding a DSL one is a little more difficult.

I'm trying to visit linksys.com right now, and I just get a blank page. I'm shopping for one for my Dad right now, and I want to compare models. I'll post any further info I find out.

Basically, you get what you pay for in a router. Belkins fail on a regular basis and are most useful as doorstops.

Thanks for the info. Tsar. I thought I would need more than the router. Walmart seems to have Linksys routers for a decent price.

I think I'm going to purchase this router.

http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/linksys-wrt160n/4505-3319_7-32815481.html?tag=rnav

People seem to love it or hate it, and I'm guessing that alot of the haters are running Vista. People that live in multi-story houses and try to run the router out of the basement and get a signal on the 2nd floor won't like it either, but, they won't like any wireless setup. If you have a house that blocks signals (because of it's construction materials,) or set it up in a bunker wireless just wont' work. wink

The good news is, most wireless routers have plug-in slots for ethernet cables anyway. So, you can buy the router now and string cables, and buy the network card at a later date if you so desire. I can't find a wireless N network card on tigerdirect.com. I'm not sure if they are even out yet.

I've got a Belkin I've had for about 3 years, bought it for cheap at Walmart for something like $25. Maybe a little more. Never had a problem with it, and it has some serious range. I've accessed it with my laptop from 100 yards away, and it is in a brick house. Using the laptop in the shop with a brick wall in between is no problem.

I had trouble with the Linksys, tried two different ones upgrading....went back to Wally World and the guy told me it depends on who your server is, something about compatibility and they sell both, so I bought a Belkin and have never had a problem since.

Use a usb wirless adapter its easier than the pci slot card, you just stick it in the usb slot and install the cd and your done.
