I like the concept of the easy-to-set dogproofs.

Which one do you like better and why: Alcatraz or Coon Collector?
What are the pros and cons of each?
What are the cons of the "door" style dogproofs in general?

I have a half dozen alcatraz, i like them, i did a few mods to them but they caught coon without them. Haven't tried the coon collectors but seem to be pretty much the same concept as the alcatraz just a little smaller

made the twist lock stake into just a straight stake. Grinded the part of the trigger (that is outside the trap) off.

the part of the trigger that was outside the trap was causing me a few misses because the coon for some reason tried to pull them out of the ground before sticking their paw in them so when they tried to pull the trap out of the ground they would pull on the trigger lever and set it off.

Did you grind it off completely flush, or leave a little nub sticking out?

How do you set them without the trigger handle?

Completely flush. Still easy to set just push the door down turn the trap over and its set or if you dont like that open the bait door and push up on the trigger

this is a picture of a coon in both a duke and alcatraz had the trailcamera set to see how he worked the set. he stuck his nose in the alcatraz without ever putting his paw in it then went straight to the duke and was caught. Was very interesting to watch him work the two traps.

Thats what I like about the coon collector-no parts on the outside.

I agree from what ive seen of the coon collector it is basically what i did to my alcatraz. Except i can buy it and not have to mod it at all.

Yes, the Coon Collector seems like a "tidy" trap. I may try some this fall.

I've not heard of coons escaping the Coon Collectors, the can't be said for the Alcatraz. I have some CC now and I'll be testing them this fall. They are a breeze to set, light to carry, and with the right bait/lure there should be few concerns with refusals. Time will tell. Right now I'm pleased with my modified Yancy's and stock Duke DP's so I'm going to be hard to convince. I've tried and left most every other DP's on the market today for various reasons.

Yancy is a good trap.Tough to release a skunk out of.Lil griz style a lot easier. When the yancy get full of gravel and door will not slide it is bad.So keep in mind how easy a trap can be realeased
