the best way to keep it is to due like he asks, Set a good example.. Stay in touch with him, pick up trash on the property, maybe offer to help bail hay or something... let him know where your traps are, familiarize him with them etc...

ya that first time asking permission can be nerve raking, but when i ask I always think, the worst thing they could say is no. Even when they do say no, i try to have a little conversation with them so they know that im a polite guy just incase they want me to trap some other time.
The 1st time is hard, heck I think every time is hard. You are asking a landowner if a stranger can come on their land and kill animals. But like you say, have a conversation with them if they do say no, and I have had land owners change their mind just because I was able to look them in the eye and talk to them.

Good Job. It only gets better. When you start catchin critters next fall adjacent landowners may start to give permission too. A good professional reputation goes a long way. Might want to get some business cards made up. I am not very puter literate so my son does them for me.

Farmers around here hate 3 things; deer, beaver, and coons, in that order.
Never had trouble getting permission to bow hunt deer. Been begged to come get the beaver. And while catching the beaver would I please get some of the coons that are getting in the corn bin.
Some farmers don't like foothold traps around because they are afraid of their dog, or a neighbor's dog, getting in them. I show them a cage trap or a dogproof trap, and usually have no problem.

Black Hole's: An attatchment for a foot hold trap that makes them pretty much pet proof, but might be spendy enough to make Grizz's or more Duffers look good.

buck, here deer huntin is harder to get than trapping. most land locked up by landowners or leases.
and DONT offer too much info. give him what he wants, no more, no less. (that means info. r: your set locations and catches etc.)

The Black holes are cheap compared to Grizz and other DP traps. If you have the 1 1/2's already, check out Cumberland's. I think they are about $5 apiece.

Congrats! A cheap & easy way to dog-proof 1 1/2s is to cut a square of plywood (about 12" x 12" or so) and drill a hole in the center, big enough for a coon to get his front paw in. Dig a shallow hole for the trap (make sure the jaws when closed don't stick up above top of the hole). Stake, set, bed trap. Add lure & bait, cover with plywood. Should keep dogs out of it- has worked for me so far. Also keeps the coon from chewing on its foot.
Not the way to go if you're putting out hundreds of sets, though.

I use almost no pan tension, so as soon as the paw touches the pan, the trap fires.
I use a rubber band to attach a cotton ball (soaked in fish oil) to the pan. The coon sees it and puts his foot right in there.

A marshmellow could probably be used in place of the cotton ball.

man you are lucky! i use to have three really good places to trap and two of them were "no" last year mostly because of greedy ^%#$% deer hunters. makes me not even want to deer hunt cause then im assosiated with those @$$%^&*%. anyhow, congrats on the permission, never assume you have permission, can really get your tit in a ringer fast like.

If possible, ask to trap after deer season. I have some ground that I know I cannot trap until after season, and I work it into the schedule when deer season closes.
Also, always tell the landowner how your trapping is going to benefit them.

There was an article either in ffg or T&PC magazines a while back about using 6" PVC pipe caps with a hole in them placed over a shallow buried 1 1/2. Had the benefit of eye appeal or could be camoed from thieves.Probably a few bucks per cap, pricier than plywood squares but lighter, cheaper than a griz.

That was FFG, Luke. I liked that idea, but that guy uses #1 coils for those caps. I have 1 1/2 coils, and for some reason can't find PVC caps big enough to cover them.
By the way-I like your signature
