Lancashire Evening Post (UK)
Woman sent hate mail to animal research organisation
21 April 2008

http://www.lep.co.uk/news/Woman-sent-hate-mail-to.4003398.jp

A 60-year-old woman from Lancashire has been warned she may be sent to prison after admitting sending hate mail to an animal research organisation.

the day her trial was due to begin at Preston Crown Court, Diane
Jamieson, from Preston, pleaded guilty to six charges concerning
sending threatening and intimidating letters to Huntingdon Life
Services and persons connected to the organisation.

The number of letters sent by Jamieson, of Lytham Road, Ashton,
contained in the charges she has admitted, comes to over 40, Preston Crown Court was told.

Eight other charges she had faced are to be left on file after
Jamieson admitted six offences of Interference with Contractual
Relationships.

The offences cover dates from November 2005 to March last year. A
manager based at the Cambridge animal research organisation and
individuals connected to the company received the letters.

The judge, Mr Justice Irwin, said under recent legislation the
"starting point" for such offences was an immediate custodial
sentence.

Jamieson will return to Preston Crown Court to be sentenced on May 22.

The charges were brought as a result of a nationwide police
investigation, Operation Achilles, which targeted criminal activity associated with animal rights extremism

A couple of Huntingdon Life Service's executives have been physically attacked and beaten. Many employees, because of the constant barrage of threats, have quit their jobs. Others have had to hire security people to guard them and their families.

I'd give her a minimum of 5 years.

Tempers flare over animal rights views 21.04.2008

Police were called in to put a stop to violence on Marine Parade on Saturday when activists protesting against animal testing were
confronted by an opposing protester.

Margaret Harkema, the wife of local scientist Dr Allen Goldenthal, from Valley Animal Research Centre, said she was verbally abused and pushed to the ground as she handed out flyers promoting the benefits of animal testing.

"If there is no animal research, there is no cure," Mrs Harkema said.

The flyers depicted a girl who was recovering from cancer therapy
teamed with a message about the cures that could be discovered thanks to animal research.

"The situation got very aggressive. I was pushed, intimidated and
sworn at. It was scary but if I had to stand alone I would."

About 150 supporters of SAFE, Save Animals From Experiments, hit the streets of Napier's central business district to campaign against animal testing.

Campaign director Hans Kriek said he was thrilled with the turnout and the display of enthusiasm to close laboratories like Dr Goldenthal's, where beagles are used for testing for national and international companies, governments and universities.

"There is certainly a strong presence in Napier which is going to be important for our fight to close places like that down," Mr Kriek said.

"People were really into the cause and certainly made a strong statement."

The SAFE activists had loud signs and louder voices as the crusade walked to the Sound Shell on Marine Parade.

Victoria Girling-Butcher, frontwoman for Lucid3, was meant to headline the outdoor concert that followed the march but due to a hail storm, the concert was called off. Indie/folk artist from Christchurch Flip Grater was the only singer who managed to get stage time.

Girling-Butcher performed for the crowd at Latinos in Napier later that night, however, along with the Raggamuffin Children fromChristchurch and local talent Daniel Munro.

Just imagine the hue and cry if the Anti Researchers were attacked and knocked down.

What isn't being said as loudly is that the AR Nutz would much rather prefer human testing instead of animal testing. Ever see some of the quotes from beloved Ingrid in regards to babies?

Those same people will use the drugs and medical procedures used on bio lab animals to medicate their own animals. How does one spell hypocrite???

TWO WEEKS??? Pretty harsh treatment.

It could be termed as unconsitutional as violating the express prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment.
