A contract for a Brain Surgeon (literally) led to this:

Doctor: "So why can't you just kill all the beaver coming into my pond?"

My reply: "Because Sir ... your pond is less than 100 yards from the Arkansas River, with a feeder creek going straight to it."

Doctor: "So why can't you just kill all the beaver coming into my pond?"

My reply: "Sir ... we can control the damage and flooding, but we will not be able to kill all the beaver that have access to this property."

Doctor: "But why can't you just kill all of the beaver?"

My reply: "Your Neighbors must be feeding them."

Doctor: "Well if they are someones pets ... don't kill them all."

My reply: "Okay."

Customer says, "Electricty is leaking in my tent"

I reply, "Put a bucket under it, I'll be there as soon as I can"

Of course, it's not ADC work....but I sure got a chuckle out of it.

On a squirrel job, after coming down from the attic inspection, the customer asked, " Did you find any squirrel nests or eggs ? "
"Squirrel eggs... ??? ", I replied. " Yes "' he stated. Trying my best to keep a straight face, I explained to him why squirrels don't lay eggs....
Regards,
Mike

I got a call from someone this week with a cat in the basement that was terrorizing the family. Everytime they went downstaris it would growl at them and scare them. She wanted to know if I could catch the cat, I said yes, How soon could I get there,(this was a night mind you) This was when I explained what our after hour charges were. "You mean you charge money?" She told me that she did not thnk that she should have to pay for it because it was not her cat....

I explained that it was not my cat either and I perfered to spend my evening with my family instead of spending my time and gas money on "her" problems.

I worked a job last year for a lady and didn't charge her a dime. I used cage traps and she checked the traps for me and called me when there was something there. Her initial complaint was a problem with raccoons. They kept getting in her garage and eating the cat food. She showed me the OPEN DOOR where the "coons" get in.

I set the job and in about 2 weeks time caught 15 possum and 1 coon. I went to pick up a possum one day and she says, "Now that you are getting all these possum out of the way, maybe you can start catching those coons now!"

She didn't want to hear it when I told her the problem was the possum and not coon like she thought. Oh...BTW...she never saw any of the coons, she just knew that is what it was!

I liked this one last year:

Doing a groundhog job in the city. Get a call that "You've got a baby groundhog in the trap"

When I arrive, its a pregnant possum.

How can I identify a pregnant opossum from a female opossum that isn't pregnant? The best I can do is to check the pouch. If there are young in there I assume that she isn't pregnant at that time. I'm not sure how soon opossums breed after delivering young. With rabbits the day of delivery can be the day of re-breeding.

Haven't done much animal control work in town. Farmers are always easier to get along with. Interesting though that the same people who hire you, sometimes will feel sorry for the pest they've hired you to get rid of, trying to feed, water or give it shade.

That's why I always try to get and address before we get into any discussion ... it's amazing how dumb people can be ... The local CO and I have managed more than a few wildlife violation arrests because of simple ramblings over the phone .

So my dumbest thing ever said by a customer has to be .... " I don't care , you go ahead and call the ^#^@# Conservation Officer , you have to figure out where I live to arrest me !!"

A message from my machine.
My husband and I were coming home last night and we saw a big turtle on the corner. It's not there now but we know it made a nest there. They're many kids in the neiborhood and we are concerned the kids will dig up the nest. Can you come and get the eggs, hatch them and return them to our niebor hood? My number is........

i had a guy about two months ago tell me
"theres a armodillo living under my shed"
(notice what part of the country i live in)

i said are you sure it is not a opossum?

he said "boy how bad to you think my eyes are. i see them all the time on the road. its a dang armadillo."

i went back the next day with a picture book of the animals in illinois and to pick up the possum that was living under his shed.

'Dillers are well up into Missouri, in the northern county's, so depending on what part of Ill your in, it's possible, and you just happened the catch the grinner.

Not only "possible", but they are here in limited numbers. Southern Illinois has a fair number already, especially in the Shawnee Forest area. A WCO down near Harrisburg had a call from a lady about her yard being demolished (serious grubbing), and he loaded the place up with cage traps, expecting coons or skunks. Caught several 'dillos in her yard.

I see them hit on I-55 just south of St. Louis all the time, and on I-44 around the Cuba area once in a while. Here's a good article about their "movement" northward.....

http://www.prairiestateoutdoors.com/index.php?/pso/article/another_illinois_armadillo_sighting/

Funny how 'possums did the same thing. About 125 years ago their northernmost range was Tennessee and Kentucky, and back then no one thought they could ever get any farther north due to colder winter conditions. Now they are clear up to Canada and doing well. Of course the dillos are a lot worse for temperature control, but as long as they can find a food source near their dens they can take some cold weather.

'Dillers are known to carry the Bacillus that causes Leprosy. While really only serious along the Gulf Coast, it's something to remember and make sure you take precautions and clean up well after contact.

Yes Bigbob but I beleive I read that it cannot be passed on to humans.

Kinda like mange in coyotes and fox.

It only affects Humans, but supposedly is only a problem around the gulf coast. I'd much rather be safe than sorry.

I told my friend (who is 25 years old) that I stop and check out intact possum roadkill.

Friend: Why?

Me: I always wanted a pet possum. I'm checking females to see if babies are in the pouch.

Friend: Oh, ok. (frown)

Me: What?

Friend: But that's gross, having to cut them out of the womb and stuff. Won't you like, get arrested if someone sees you chopping up an animal on the side of the road?

Me: Possums are marsupials...

Friend: What's a marsupial?

Me: You know, kanagroo, koala bears.

Friend: (blank look)

Me: THEY HAVE A POUCH LIKE A KANGAROO YOU DON'T HAVE TO CUT OPEN THE WOMB!

Friend: Oh.

Me: How did you pass 8th grade biology!

Friend: (sheepish shrug)
