What do you do when coyotes don't visit your sets?

Scenario: Several coyotes are trapped successfully in an area for a period of time and then the sets grow cold. Perhaps the coyotes approach close but not close enough OR the darned things don't go near sets at all. What do you do?
I am currently writing an article on ways to address this and will submit to either Fur-Fish-Game or Trapper Predator Caller. (Not sure which one???)
Wondered what you all have up your camo sleeves??? Mark

Use different lure, bait and urine. Or back off a ways and set trails with some snares. It works for me!

I'd p.m. Mark June and hear what he had to say! LOL If it were me, I'd do something completely different. Like set type, lure change, urine change, etc. There's lots of different changes one can make.

Blackdog, Have you been sneekin a peek see at my article transcripts? Your getting warm and there are proven methods that are used when coyotes will not commit to standard methods. I think they'll be fair interest in what I outline in the article (working on it right now) and as I always do, I'm referencing the science behind the methodolgy so those interested can look into it further.
Hey, be the waym who read FFG and TPC or one and not the other? I usually send to TPC or even the NTA's AT, but FFG has been after me for a coyote submission, so may go that route. Just wondering??

Now this is going to sound really stupid! Take something (anything)like a empty 2litre bottle of soda and set it off the trail 20yds and about 50-100yds from the rejected set. Set it like you would a scent post set...... They can't resist to check out something out of place. Its something that they don't associate with traps like a post set or dirt hole or other trapping smells & baits! It does work! Sounds stupid but works!! Troy
You know, I never really thought about that until now - I watched coyotes this year at least two different times biting and pulling at a deflated bright green kevlar type balloon that I could see from my tree stand. They would trot down the trail and one would always start chewing and pulling on this darned balloon. I went to look at it later and the thing was chewed up as well as an old ball that had washed in from the creek. So.... I would bet that would be a really good "curve ball" type set for trap shy coyotes. I will give that a try next year.

I hope you send it to TPC because that is what I get. I agree with the Soda bottle set. Someone put a antifreeze jug in one of my fields I was trapping. The yotes were drawn to it like a magnet. They walked right to it every time they went through. I was going to set it but we had some major storms and the area flooded before I could get a trap in. I will definitely use some of these "curiousity sets" next year!!

i change baits up, change sets up slightly or dramaticly, blind set, snare, clean everything..or my favorite is to forget your freeze proof stuff and let your set freeze in, they always come in when you do that lol. if all else fails call 'em in

Just putting the finishing touches on will be a thought provoking article I promise. I reference 3 critical studies in coyote research whereby coyote behavior can be changed from a neophobic (shy/scared)response to a assertive response simply by how we set up our sets. And I'm afraid that a common belief that coyotes investigate everything in their territory has been shown time and time again to be incorrect. In fact the inverse is truer and I have done field research personally where coyote response is directly tied to home range so I've seen coyotes in action and the darned things are predictable as can be... if you know what to predict.
Dang, I was going to contact editor Mitch Cox at FFG about this article as it's pretty darned long and they pay better than TPC!!! But most so far say TPC.....

I don't get TPC so put it in FFG. After reading it i'll explain to ya how to catch those walk bys, lol.
Only study ive read is coyote A going by leaving doo doo near by to let me know he's not buying what im trying to sell him today, lol.
10 years of that off and on the answer started to sink into my hard head as to what was going on and how to correct the problem.

I use a flat set 20 feet or more down wind with a very small amount of gland lure . This set is placed when things start to slow down and the gland lure is added when its time. Some of these sets are covered with a piece of plywood so they are operational when I need them just lift the plywood and add a small drop of gland and gone without hardly breaking stride.Yes I have taken more than a few with this set so its not some armchair dream. They will find that little drop of gland lure.

make a real good cat set and for some darned reason a dang yote will just have to get in it for some unknown reason.
that does work more than i like it too, but, if they are just flat walking by my sets and it is usually where i have taken a number of yotes from that area i will go to straight flat sets since most of the sets i use are variations of dirtholes.

Seldom have seen it fail to snag a suspicious or uninterested walk-by coyote! A blind scent/natural scent post set near by with something reserved exclusively for such situations like bobcat urine/gland, mink urine/gland, weasel musk, etc. in small amounts. Ace PS- Personally in my region I have seen just as many coyotes go way out of their way to avoid unnatural things like plastic bottles and beer cans as those who investigate it so I wouldn't want to depend on that for my secret set.
