HOW TO remove plating and ANNEAL nuts!!!

OK this is going to be a step by step pictorial on HOW TO remove the plating often times found on nuts,bolts,AND chain used with trapping. AND how to anneal or soften nuts.
#1. After determining the size of nuts you need (I use them for cable ties, earth anchors and such as they are MUCH stronger than aluminum ferrels) wire aproximatly 50 into a circle on some trapping wire. The reason for this is to keep them together and make things easier.

#1. After determining the size of nuts you need (I use them for cable ties, earth anchors and such as they are MUCH stronger than aluminum ferrels) wire aproximatly 50 into a circle on some trapping wire. The reason for this is to keep them together and make things easier.
 #2 The equipment needed, muratic acid(used in driveway & mortar cleaning),baking soda which is a base and neutralized the acid. 2 containers [b]#3 After placing the wired nuts OR chain in the first container slowly apply the muratic acid. The acid is VERY corrosive and fumes excessively when applied.. USE IT OUTSIDE only and with EXTREME CAUTION as it can and WILL burn you. As seen the acid reacts immediatly with the plating and will remove it in seconds.AGAIN use extreme caution with ANY acid!! The fumes are JUST as caustic and NOT to be inhaled!!
#4 In the meantime mix a fair amount of baking soda with water in the 2nd bucket. This will be used to neutralize the acid and/or take care of any spills or accidental contact as the soda, a base will neutralize the acid on contact.[/b [b]#5 Remove the nuts/chain from the acid, I use a pair of long nosed pliers or screwdrive to do this. Place them INTO the soda/water solution. The acid is neutralized ON CONTACT. Here you can see the soda at work on the nuts.[/b [b]#6 I then remove the nuts/chain and rinse with a garden hose to remove any residue. 
#7 This step is UNIVERSAL for rusting, toss them in the grass and they will rust in only a few short hours, NOT needed here but a nice tip. 
NOW FOR THE ANNEALING!!!!
Step 1. Dig a hole large enough to hold a small bag of charcoal briquettes AND the wired up nuts. 
#2 place the briquettes in the hole and light them..  #3 Once the charcoal has fully lit and is starting to burn down white, place the nuts on the coals. #4 BURRY EM!!! And leave them overnight. THIS IS THE SECRET to the annealing, bringing them up to a high temperature then slooooowly letting them cool. This takes the temper OUT of the nuts. The REASON for this is the make them less likely to 1.crack when hammered on. 2. Softens the threads and reduces the chance of cutting the cable.  #5 Dig em up and they are ALL DONE!!  Hope this post helps someone out!!

To anneal I just throw them in the stove for a while. When nearing white, pull them out and throw in the driveway for a few hours. No walking around barefoot.

Good post, Lynx. I agree with you that the real secret to this process is to let them cool as slowly as possible. If they cool too quickly (as in a water quench) it will make them brittle.
Appreciate your taking the time to do this: gotta help a lot of folks.

Good post and information.
I NEVER go through the bother of annealing the nuts when making snares or earth anchors.
I cracked VERY FEW nuts when squeezing them in place on the cable with my bench vise. I've used them right out-of-the-box for many many years. Never had an escape because of a broken connection yet..........

if you are not in a big hurry,just use a cup full of acid in that amount of water,it takes longer but a lot safer..lol..that scat right out of the jug will take yer nose hairs out and its only 6 or 10 %

I guess I'm with Tex I never saw the need I don't remember ever having to many cracked nuts. And I just smashed them flat with a hammer.
One year I found a great deal on some aluminum nuts and they worked good.
But the Info was great If you feel you need to heat your nuts LOl

If your buying your nuts at a place that only stocks a low grade, junk nut you may get by without annealing. but if you get a higher grade nut its gonna crack. We only use grade 5 or 8 nuts at work and they DO crack and cut the wire.

Man.. when I said be careful with acid it spurred other posts with people going berserk of the dangers of acid.. not true ,it's not dangerous at all if you use a little common sense ,I`m guessing crossing the street is about 79.999% more dangerous than using muriatic acid
I have been using the stuff all my life and we used the 10 or 15 % stuff when I was a kid to clean masonry,if takes you one good whiff I relise you don`t want to snort the stuff..lol,and it does`nt burn your skin up like a james bond movie,it hurts like heck in cuts and in your eyes
other things not to inhale ,chlorine, paint, Drano, anything under the kitchen sink, nail polish ,magic markers,farts
if you want to use vinegar and sit there for 10 days by all means use it...sometimes I wonder how some of y`all get the nerve up to leave the house with all the dangers out there

What would happen if you put the nuts in the fire without first removing the plating? Also would this process soften and anneal bracing wire? Thanks,,,Rickey

The would soften as would the wire..done know if the plating would burn off or not ...
